Actually, there was a great deal more to the case than what is portrayed by most of the media. Please check out Liebeck vs. McDonalds.

I saw the "Hot Coffee" documentary that discussed this (and other torte reform topics) in detail. Admittedly, the film makers have an agenda; however, it was eye-opening on what actually happened.
