Whoever told you that harpsichords are not period is mis-informed; they date back into the 1400's. Get your hands on a copy of:

More than you'll probably ever want to know in just the first 150 pages or so. Copies are available in university libraries and major public library systems in PA (check Worldcat), so you should have no trouble getting a copy via inter-library loan.
