[SCA-AE] OT: Musicians? Harpsichord Help!

Hi all - in looking at performance pieces for next year's Ice Dragon, I thought I might do a harpsichord piece - and then was told that harpsichords are not period. However, I am seeing spinet style harpsichords as early as 1580 (as opposed to virginal harpsichords, ottavino harpsichords, etc) in literature. And have a photo of one dated to 1607, so I'm thinking they were made earlier. 
Anyone there that can point me in a good research direction or have a better answer? E-Groups I should look into? AE musicians to get in touch with?
Also, does anyone out there have a virginal or know where I could rent one? This would be a much better alternative to schlepping my Mom's harpsichord to the site (it's a Neupert single, but still...)
