OK. Wanna stay 'period'?? Use tree sap to stick the ends together. It dries
hard like rock and doesn't add the chemical intrusion of the non-period
glues.

Just another approach.

Just as a possibility... I know it is not necessarily period but,
perhaps a tiny drop of cyanoacrylate (aka Crazy Glue) on the knot
would hold?
