Greetings,

My last post was a bit long, so I thought I would make a seperate posts on cords.

Katheryn has been learning various "arts".  One she tried last pennsic was using a lucet, to make cording.  She wanted to make some cords for our award medallions.  However, she's having a problem with her cord breaking.  I don't know if she's doing it too tight or if she's using the wrong type of fiber for the cording.  What should she use to make a lucet cord for medallions?

I assume there are various how-to's out on the web, however, does anyone have a specific website that they can recommend? Katheryn is 11, if that makes a difference.  Unfortunately, I've never learned how to use a lucet, so I can't help her.  Katheryn will be at a number of events this Spring, if it's something learned better in person.

So, on the subject of cords.  I've seen fingerloop braiding.  Actually, I've seen Mistress Phiala do a lot of that.   I'm going to try and make time to actually attend one of her classes/workshops on making them.

Other then the fingerloop braiding.. what other "styles" of making cords (or cord-like pieces) are period?

I didn't see a lot of it, since I got distracted, but I think Mistress Rhiannon and Master Bedwyr (using a diferent name) had a Viking method at 12th night?   It looked like our youth were having a wonderful time using them.  I think they were called Bodkins?   I know Katheryn had an absolutely wonderful time using them.  I was wondering how hard would it be to construct something similar for Katheryn (and whomever else would like to use it)?  Any suggestions on where I can go for the supplies or instructions.  I did see some instructions/information next to their 12th night display, but unfortunately the copy I had did not make it home.

Katheryn is enjoying learning new arts, so I appreciate any suggestions and assistance.  Especially with introducing her to new (to her) arts.  So far, she seems to love fiber arts, but she is enjoying sewing and wants to try some scribal arts, too.  She takes after her Daddy, so she actually has artistic ability.  :)

Please feel free to contact me off-list with any ideas or suggestions,

Thanks very much for everyone's time in reading these two missives,

Tessa, Princess
