I need about half a yard of black silk to make a (tie it yourself) bowtie. We have a black tie affair to attend this weekend and I need to make it before Friday night. I can't believe I don't have black silk on hand, and the stores around here have nothing suitable (lots of quilting cotton though). If anyone would be able to pop half a yard of black silk (satin, taffeta, dupioni, shantung, just not noil) to me in the mail that would be able to reach me in time, I would be sooo grateful and I will happily reimburse postage and cost of the fabric. I'm at 5 East st Oneonta, NY 13820. If you can do this favor for me, please email me offlist so that I can get your address to send you payment for the silk and postage. Thank you in advance Thanks, Despina de la really should have some black silk somewhere, darnit From ef-fex.b at worldnet.att.net Tue Sep 1 10:29:28 2009 From: ef-fex.b at worldnet.att.net (FRANK BENZ) Date: Tue, 1 Sep 2009 10:29:28 -0400 Subject: [SCA-AE] Cannons Needed Message-ID: <10982_1251815377_n81ETaHi016797_004d01ca2b10$9dd2a7e0$1001a8c0@otter> Greetings All, The Rhydderich Hael is in need of a working mortar firing (no shells) cannon or cannons to be used at a demo on October 3rd in Hamburg, New York. I went there primarily to do research for a novel I plan to write, as I had never before been to a casino. While I was there I accidentally put down my ideas journal and then couldn't find it afterwards. This is a book that means very much to me and have had/used for years. I just found out Security found it and is holding it for me in their Lost & Found. Here's the thing: it's over an hour's drive from Auburn to Turning Stone, and the gas usage to-and-from would be just as bad as the Fed Ex charges the casino would charge me for sending it back (they'll only send it back via Fed Ex on my nickel). I am wondering, if anyone from Coppertree is going to this weekend's event, would they be willing to stop by the casino on their way and pick the book up for me? I could give the name of whoever volunteers to the Security office and tell them to expect you and hand it over to you. The book could then be turned over to myself at Wildwood or to any member of the Canton of Angels Keep who is attending. And I can promise a reward for whoever brings it from Turning Stone: a wooden chess set of my own crafting (though it may take me a few weeks to get the parts and complete all necessary work on it). Can anyone help?? Every fall, the Barony of Delftwood holds a demo in coordination with the local St. Marie Among the Iroquois Museum, in Syracuse. This year we were left with a slim selection of dates, and have scheduled our demo for Saturday and Sunday September 19th and 20th. We do realize that the 19th of September is in conflict with the upcoming Fall Coronation. With that said, it is our request to any gentles within reach, that are not planning on attending Coronation, please come out and play and assist in our endeavor. There will be Fencing! There will be heavy fighting! There will be period games! There is camping space and in the evening there can be revelry! I am always looking for good articles for the Florilegium. If you have researched a little known subject in our period or you practice a little known art or craft, writing an article is an excellent way to introduce others to the work you've done. I'm especially interested in academic papers written for A&S contests because, unfortunately, few have time at such an event to read them. Even the judges. Getting them published in the Florilegium lets your hard word benefit the entire Known World. I have just heard that the GeoCities free websites are going away. If you have such a site with SCA-type files and don't wish to move to the pay version, the files that you have worked so hard to produce, may make a good addition to the Florilegium. I am in the process of moving several articles on tablet weaving by Eve the Just from GeoCities to the Florilegium and would be happy to consider more. Mundanely, I am an Electronics Engineer with a specialty in designing and delivering board and systems level projects. Unfortunately, I'm still in the middle of what has been a long search for my next opportunity. If you are on LinkedIn and believe that I have shown any skills in creating and running the Florilegium that a perspective employer might find appealing, I would appreciate you submitting a recommendation for me there. My LinkedIn profile can be found at: http://www.linkedin.com/in/marksharris Thanks, Stefan ========== A Blending of the Past and Present Over the past nineteen years in an ongoing effort, I have been collecting bits of useful information from various newsgroups, mail lists and articles submitted to me by their authors. In order to make this information available to others, I have placed this information in a collection of files I call Stefan's Florilegium. The Florilegium is on the web at: http://www.florilegium.org I have added an RSS feed for the Florilegium website. If you are already reading RSS feeds, please add the Florilegium RSS feed to find out when new and updated files as well as new features get added to the website. If you are unfamiliar with RSS, or Real Simple Syndication, it is a method built into many web browsers, and also available as a separate tool, which alerts you when the contents of your favorite websites have been changed. I am always interested in new articles. If you have written an article that would be of interest to others in the SCA, please send it to me for possible inclusion in the Florilegium. A&S documentation and class handouts will also often work out well. I am especially interested in A&S papers. THLord Stefan li Rous Ansteorra stefan at florilegium.org Here are the new files for this month: In the BEVERAGES section: Warm-Beere-art "An aside? on Beer and English Customs" by THL Johnnae llyn Lewis. Message-ID: <4806_1252643872_n8B4bpFD011592_399774.59637.qm@web32603.mail.mud.yahoo.com> It's that time of year again. 8 years since "it happened" for everyone. 11 years since "it happened" for me. We sit back and think about all of the things that make it a good day to live. Waking up next to a loved one. Being able to hear the argument between siblings in the other room. That wonderful feeling of the joints aching as you jump up in time to stop the fight from escalating into something physical. Seeing the kids in your life react to you being upset, and all of you being able to calm things down, and be a true, and happy family. Forget all of the extra baggage that you may be carrying around by this point. Forget the deadlines, the homework assignments, the bills. Forget who you are angry with Forget the problems that await you on the desk. Take this moment, this very moment.... and go hug some one you love. Tell them how you feel about them. Remind them that you LOVE them, and want to be with them. Don't let that moment slip away, because, well, life is fragile, and we never know when the rug will be yanked from under our feet, and life will come crashing down face first into the cement. So go live your life, or second chance at life. If you have more than a second chance, you are one in a Million, no Trillion, so DAMN IT celebrate !!!!!! YES there WAS an R in that word way back when they translated that ancient book. --Rob ________________________________ Herre Eirik Haarfager Goransson / Rob Baldassano Member, Barony of Endless Hills; Marshal - at Large & Deputy Baronial Marshal; House Odlahorde; Viking ; VROC #5029 (Tigger) ---------------------------- Come see our online store, now available at: http://shop.dracowolf.com =============== From elss_of_augsburg at yahoo.com Fri Sep 11 12:10:43 2009 From: elss_of_augsburg at yahoo.com (Elss_of_Augsburg) Date: Fri, 11 Sep 2009 09:10:43 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [SCA-AE] Coming Soon to an Emailbox Near You - the September Althing Message-ID: <24333_1252685458_n8BGAvst012407_190913.81934.qm@web46213.mail.sp1.yahoo.com> Greetings to All from the Chronicler of the Barony Marche of the Debatable Lands! ? Master Wulfgar's Chivalry Challenge September 19th, 2009 Owlsherst, East Kingdom (Wellsville, PA - near York, PA) Soldiers of the Society, Honor and Glory await you! The Shire of Owlsherst and Master Wulfgar o' the Wood invite you to join us for a full day dedicated to combat in the list. The format of the day's combat will be: each Knight or Master will have his own list area where unbelted soldiers can challenge him to combat. There will be time for both combat and for commentary and feedback for training purposes. We have commitments from several members of Eastern Chivalry, including both King Andreas and Prince Konrad, to be present. After each unbelted soldier has fought each member of Chivalry, or by mid-afternoon, whichever is earliest, we will hold a double- or single-elimination tourney, depending on the numbers present. Prizes will be awarded by both the Chivalry, and by the observing populace. The first ten members of Chivalry who commit to attending and do so will receive a "portable hole" and banner pole to hang their banner from. There are still a couple of these spots left - contact the Autocrat Linette de Gallardon via email at . For those who do not fight, we encourage everyone to bring chairs and shade pavilions in order to enjoy watching the combat on the field, and to participate in choosing the soldier to receive the prize from the populace. There are ample facilities for indoor activities as well as a covered picnic pavilion. A hearty, fighter-friendly dayboard will be available indoors and out. In the evening the justly famous Owlsherst Cooks Guild will prepare a simple yet hearty, meat-heavy feast designed with the fighting man in mind. Afterwards, there will be space and time for both a Soldier's Circle, rehashing the day's exploits and telling stories of combat fierce, and also for a Bardic Circle in another room for those who desire less martially-oriented tales and songs. Further information on this event can be found at . Menus and other information will hopefully be posted soon at . Please make your reservation to join us! Turn left on Military and follow this south. It merges with Cayuga Dr. Follow Cayuga to the right when it splits from S. Military Rc, and it becomes Buffalo Ave. This will take you around Grand Island and avoids 190. Niagara University students and parents have been warned to avoid 190 through the fall semester. Untangling the whole thing: "Hangi" is Odin, due to his having been hanged from the tree. (got to wonder about a fellow with so many aliases). "Bruni" is also (sometimes) Odin, so Bruni's mead is poetry. It is used to praise bold deeds, and it can be remembered and repeated long after--when both the poet and the doer of the deeds are dead (not explicit, but implied). I don't know if the poet intends a (non-skaldic) pun between draughts of mead and drafts drawn on a bank. The poem can be read either as urging the listener to write poetry--how I chose to interpret it in my initial reply--or to do bold deeds in order that poets will write about him, thus getting him remembered. Donnghaile, Silver Buccle, with the assistance of THLady Anlaith ingen Trena. Their Majesties extended Their heart felt thanks to the populace of the kingdom, for with out them there would be no Kingdom, and They had truly seen how great Aethelmearc?s people are while They sat the throne. Their Majesties inducted Countess Isabeau de l?Isle and THLady Keinwen Ragnarsdottir as Seamstresses to the crown, and thanked all of the fine gentles who had lent their assistance to clothing Their Majesties. Their Majesties announced that they had created a new award in Aethelmearc, the Order of the Golden Thorn. This Order would be awarded at the pleasure of the crown for defense or protection of the crown. The token of this order is a garter, and there will be no scrolls. Their Majesties did induct as principles of this new order Sir Otto of Westphalia for his dedication and service to the crown on and off the field and at many meetings while serving as Aethelmearc Warlord, Lord Kenshin Sato who stayed by His Majesty?s side throughout every battle carrying the kingdom banner and often putting himself in harm?s way, Baron Vladislaw Nikulich who served as captain of the Queen?s Guard and served as the voice of the Queen when she lost hers, Lord Jacob of Dunmar who had the uncanny ability to materialize whenever Their Majesties needed to carry heavy items and protected Her Majesties back from harm, and Lord Tiberius Pinarius Varro who dedicated himself throughout the reign to defending both of Their Majesties both on and off the field. Each of these gentles received a red and gold garter created by Lady Avitoria Vidua. Their Majesties asked all of the scribes who contributed scrolls to Their reign to stand and be recognized, when by brush, or pen, pencil, words or translation. Their Majesties thanked them, for their services to the arts, as without them there would be no court. Their Majesties called for Their Heir, the Prince Henri d?Artois. Henri came forward with his household and stated that he had no grudge to bear, but rather had much love her his parents King Maynard and Queen Liadain, and wished them nothing but long life and happiness. But Their Majesties had a law that states that Their Reign had come to an end, and Henri presented himself as rightful Heir and recounted His noble lineage. Their Majesties replied that They would indeed act in accordance with this law, but that They would need some time to address the gentles still in Their service. Their Majesties called for the artisans who had created tokens, provided services and more for Their Majesties? reign: Countess Ilish O?Donovan, Lady Avitoria Vidua, Sir Aengus MacBain, Lady Isolda filia Georgii, Lady Alianor de Ravenglas, Lady Sophie Davenport, THLord Pearce Redsmythe, Mistress Honnoria of Thesscore, Master John Michael Thorpe, Lady Margarita d?Sienna, Mistress Ts?vee?a bas Tseepora Levi, Lady Nivah Katherine Rose of Bannockburn, Lady Deirdre Scot of Clan Scot, and Lady Felicitas Flussmullnerin. These gentles were all given tokens painted by Lady Isolda filia Georgii and released from Their Majesties? service. Next Their Majesties called forward those who had served Them throughout Their Reign, Master Edmund Lambert of Tregelles, Duchess Dorinda Courtenay, Baroness Geirny Thorgrimsdottir, Baroness Ekaterina Volkova, Baroness Katherine Kersey, Baron William Freskin Murray, Mistress Cynthia Love of the Tower, THLady Katla Ulfhethinn, Lady Aillean inghen Proinnsias, Mistress Cori Ghora, Sir Sextus Plinius Callidus, Lady Mary Elizabeth Clason, THLord Filipo de Sancto Martino, THLord Brandubh O?Donnghaile, and Lord Drugar Mensch. Their Majesties thanked these gentles for their services throughout Their Reign and presented them with tokens painted by Lady Isolda filia Georgii and released them from Their service. Her Majesty then called for Her royal guard, Captain Baron Vladislaw Nikulich, Lord Jacob of Dunmar, Lord Tiberius Pinarius Varro, Lord Ardenn Scot of Clan Scott, Lady Ysabeau Tiercelin, Sir Olafr Thorvartharson, THLord Pearce Redsmythe, Lady Esa Baird, THLord Caoinlean Seanchaidh called Tower, Lord Vigo da Napoli, Lord Tadhg Sotal O?Neill, THLord Georg Eisenfaust, Mistress Irene von Schmetterling, Lord Gabriel de Wenslagh, Sir Thorgrim Skullsplitter, Lord Caelin O?Ruairc, Baron Seoan O?Donndubhain and Lord Alexander du Lac. His Majesty thanked them for their service in defending His Queen, and Her Majesty instructed them all to keep their armbands as a token. She also presented them all with heart tokens to give to their inspiration that they had been away from while in Her service and released them from Her service. Their Majesties called for Lady Morwenna Everdon, Mistress Elisabeth Johanna von Flossenburg, and Baroness Marguerite de la Marche and awarded each of the Sigil of Aethelmearc, made by the hand of Master John Michael Thorpe, for their longstanding service and support to Their Reign, and released them. Lastly Their Majesties summoned Duchess Anna Blackleaf and gave her special thanks, for she above all others had supported Their Majesties, kept Them on Schedule, fetched, and delivered messages even before Their Majesties could ask, and they did present her as well with the Sigil of Aethelmearc, by the hand of Master John Michael Thorpe. Their Majesties once more summoned Their Heir, Prince Henri d?Artois. They said that they were now ready to proceed as the law mandates and crown Him king. His Majesty Maynard turned to Queen Liadain and divested her of the crown of Aethelmearc and dismissed her. He then took the crown from His own head and crowned Henri 25th King of Aethelmearc, Maynard bowed to his new sovereign and took his leave. I have every AEstel I have ever received, and they did come in handy a little while back when I populated the Kingdom's event database with several years worth of past events for the purposes of the autocrat references on the Kingdom website. Of course, I save almost anything that "might be useful later", SCA related or not. Occasionally I am redeemed for this habit when those things do prove useful, the rest of the time its just a good thing that I'm as compulsive about organizing and storing said items to take up as little space as possible. For some of the things, I've been scanning them to disk for posterity, and then tossing the paper. I had boxes of kingdom newsletters from AS single digit days, and kept them because there once was an article on period jewels that fascinated me as it applied to a bit of heraldry. (The sad part is that the Heralds would not accept it as a reference, even with documentation.) At least I didn't try to bring them with me in the last move, and they were recycled. My best in letting it go, as you will have to someday (when they pry my Pikestaff from my cold dead hand?)
