Greetings from Solveig! I am seeking yet more suggestions about the proposed Japanese banquet. Several people said they were interested in the "above the salt" option where people would either receive appropriate feastware as part of the feast or would optionally make or acquire their own for less money. Here's the question. Would people be interested in receiving relatively affordable melamine feastware instead of very pricey lacquerware. The price difference can be significant. Anyway, the basic dining set includes: 1. Covered rice bowl 2. Covered soup bowl 3. A dish for vegetables 4. At least two more dishes 5. Ideally a sake saucer These come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Further, I really am hoping to bundle a tray in the deal. These could be made either in advance by the guest or supplied as part of the package. Incidentally, not only are the trays breathtakingly period, they are also highly functional for Japanese dining. They allow a place setting to be assembled in the kitchen and then carried in to the diner all at once. Yes, this places a constraint on the kitchen. There needs to be a relatively large tray assembly area where each of the trays is assembled. On another note. What about lunch? The most practical option is: 1. Chanko nabe - stew for sumo player with rice gruel 2. Some sort of simplified temple fare with rice gruel Yes. There are interesting noodle options. However, other than somen which is served cold, noodles pretty much need to be constantly cooked in a large caldron as they are being served. Soba, udon, ramen, &c. are literally fast food items. They need to be cooked pretty much immediately prior to service. I am always looking for good articles for the Florilegium. If you have researched a little known subject in our period or you practice a little known art or craft, writing an article is an excellent way to introduce others to the work you've done. I'm especially interested in academic papers written for A&S contests because, unfortunately, few have time at such an event to read them. Even the judges. Getting them published in the Florilegium lets your hard word benefit the entire Known World. I have heard that the GeoCities free websites are going away. If you have such a site with SCA-type files and don't wish to move to the pay version, the files that you have worked so hard to produce, may make a good addition to the Florilegium. I am in the process of moving several articles on tablet weaving by Eve the Just from GeoCities to the Florilegium and would be happy to consider more. If you are a newsletter editor and would like to get a copy of this monthly article for your print newsletter several weeks before I post it to the mail lists, please contact me. If you publish a newsletter on the web, I also have a version of this article which includes the links for each file. If you would like to get on my list for the web version of this article, please email me. Thanks, Stefan ========== A Blending of the Past and Present Over the past nineteen years in an ongoing effort, I have been collecting bits of useful information from various newsgroups, mail lists and articles submitted to me by their authors. In order to make this information available to others, I have placed this information in a collection of files I call Stefan's Florilegium. The Florilegium is on the web at: http://www.florilegium.org I am always interested in new articles. If you have written an article that would be of interest to others in the SCA, please send it to me for possible inclusion in the Florilegium. A&S documentation and class handouts will also often work out well. I am especially interested in A&S papers. On November 14th the Shire of Riversedge will host a day for all Norse persona's. For once an event where you can wear your wool garb and not bathe in sweat. This event is almost entirely outside. The site opens at 9am and closes at 7pm. There will be classes through the day (two sessions in the morning, then lunch, then two sessions in the afternoon). Classes on Viking furniture/woodworking, Denmark before Jelling and stitching Norse clothing are already slated. A complete listing of classes will be posted to the Aethelmearc list closer to event time. If you are interested in teaching please contact the autocrat. Plus, we will be hosting a Norse book room for those doing research. So please bring resources with you to share. We will have monitors to help secure the room throughout the day. Also, for those into scholarly arts we will have a Norse Trivia Competition available in the book room. For Heavy fighters we will then have two different tournaments (FIELD OPENS ONLY AFTER CLASSES END- We are trying to encourage well rounded Norse Fighters!). The first will be a Double Elimination Holmganger or Cloak tournament. A 12 foot circle will be marked out and those who step off dine with Odin. The second tournament will be a Warlord style tourney with a true Viking finish involving ship to ship combat. You've got to see this one to believe it. Her Ladyship Baroness Marsi of Hadley will provide a sumptuous mid-day meal which is included in the price of admission (for special dietary concerns email swally at windsteam.net at least two weeks prior to the event). The lunch will hopefully include wild boar if the autocrat does not miss with his spear! Their will be no evening feast and a Royal Court will be held immediately following the heavy weapons tournaments. An Arts and Sciences contest for the Best Dressed Norse Person will be held with a prize for the winner by populous vote. Site fee is $8 adult or $4 for children 5-15 (includes lunch) with current membership card; a $3 non-member surcharge will be levied on all others. Make checks payable to SCA, Inc.-The Shire of Riversedge. The site is the Cochranton American Legion Hall and grounds (203 West Adams Street, Cochranton, PA 16314). Directions: Make your way to the Geneva Cochranton Exit off Interstate 79. Turn Right off the exit ramp onto Route 285 . Follow Route 285 until it "T's" onto Route 173. Turn Left onto Route 173 and go across the bridge over French Creek. Slow down the site is on the right immediately after the bridge! The event will be both inside and out so dress in appropriate fall Norse garb. Sorry-The site is not handicap friendly. For more questions contact the autocrat His Lordship Baron Stefan Ulfkellson (MKA-Stevan Waleff) at swally at windstream.net or 724-253-3636. We are not doing pre-registration for this event. As always, the focus will be on melee, melee, melee. This will be held at Risley Hall on the Cornell University campus (directions below) and site will open by 12:30pm. If the weather is nice we'll be on the front lawn, if it is not we will be in the great hall. In the later case you will probably need someone to let you in, either by the front door or by the loading dock - call my cell if needed 607-351-7815 and someone will let you in. Unfortunately this site is not CA or siege friendly, but bring everything else you've got! -Iain Directions: From the North, take Route 13 (exit 11 on I-81 South): Follow 13 South through the town of Dryden. Turn right at the traffic light in Dryden?s village center to stay on 13 South (if road signs start saying ?Rt 38? you missed the turn). A few miles further on, at a traffic light, Route 366 goes off to the left. (Route 366 comes in from the right a mile or so before this; don?t get confused.) Turn left onto route 366. At a flashing yellow light where 366 peels off to the left, you will go straight, across the bridge, and enter Cornell University?s campus; this will be Hoy Road. Turn left at the stop sign onto Campus Road and then turn right at the next stop sign onto East Avenue. Just after East Ave. crosses the gorge bridge, Risley Hall will be on your left ? a turreted, red brick building. From the Southeast: Take I-81 North to NYS Route 79 at Whitney Point. Follow 79 into Ithaca; at the first traffic light, turn right onto Stewart Avenue (the street is fashioned with red bricks), and follow from *** below. From Elmira and points West: Take Route 17 E to 13 N. Route 13 will become one-way halfway through Ithaca. Once it does so, turn right onto Buffalo Street (Byrne Dairy will be on the right corner). Stay on Buffalo Street as it goes uphill towards a flashing yellow cautionary light at Stewart Avenue. Turn left here and follow from *** below. From the Northwest: Leave I-90 at exit 42 to take Route 96 South (Geneva exit). Carefully follow the route signs through Geneva. Stay on Route 96 into Ithaca until it crosses Route 13 North (South Meadow Street). Turn left onto Route 13, then turn right onto Buffalo Street (Byrne Dairy will be on the right corner). Stay on Buffalo Street as it goes uphill towards a flashing yellow cautionary light at Stewart Avenue. Turn left here and follow from *** below. From Auburn: Take 34 South towards Ithaca. In Lansing turn left at the light to stay on 34 South (Rogue Harbor is on your left) Go 3 miles, turn left at the fork onto Cayuga Heights Rd. Go another 3 miles and turn left on Thurston Ave. (If you miss it you will suddenly be on a bridge above Ithaca Falls) Go ? mile ? Risley Hall is on your right - a turreted, red brick building *** Continue on Stewart Avenue across a bridge until you reach a 4-way stop (this is AFTER the intersection with two right turns). Turn right onto University Ave. and proceed up the hill to the first traffic light. Turn left and cross the bridge; Risley Hall is the first building on the left ? a turreted, red brick building. For those unfamiliar with the facilities available to us at Risley, there are showers available for after fighting. Please note that since Risley is a dorm - the front doors are locked. You can either knock and someone will let you in or you can come in the loading dock on the right side of the building, which will be left propped open and climb up one set of stairs to the event. Greetings from Solveig! Yes, this continues to be an odd way to plan an event. But, here is what we are looking for. The site should be within one or two hours of Syracuse, New York. Ideally, it should have a commercial kitchen with LOTS repeat LOTS of counter space. It should also ideally have wrestling mats available. It would also be nice to have a couple of rooms suitable for classrooms. The site need not be large. This will not be a large event. However, it would be absolutely wonderful if there were a cherry tree or other fruit bearing tree garden nearby. Actually, any sort of botanical garden with windy paths would be wonderful. As with all events, we need to find an economical site. The general time frame is late-May early- June. That should clear conflict with the Japanese events in BMDL and the East Kingdom. Anyway, if you know about possible sites, please, please, please tell me about them. Thank you very very much in advance. One of the event boosters is suggesting that the event might start later than usual with the site possibly opening as late as noon or even 1:00 PM. What do people think? Dinner is the main attraction or at least the central focus of the event. Incidentally, banquets really were a big deal in Japanese political life. What sort of activities might happen during the daytime? I am still hoping for a sumo tournament. Also, a poetry party might be really great. One of the boosters is rooting for calligraphy. Calligraphy is appropriate pretty much all year. If we perform a chaji with tea following the banquet, do you suppose people would be up for a quickie 30 minute introduction to how to be a guest sometime before dinner? While I think that some sort of schola would be a great way to occupy the afternoon while dinner is being prepared, I am eager for any and all suggestions at this point. Thank you all very very much! THL Brandubh ? Donnghaile, Silver Buccle, with the assistance of Lady Bera of Tavastland. Morning Court. Their Majesties invited Her Majesty Brenwen, Queen of the East, to join them in Their Court. His Majesty turned to Baron Ulrich Drachendonner and commented that his term as Baron of the Endless Hills had come to an end and asked him if he were ready to be released from this task. His Excellency replied that he would ask for a moment to hold one last court so that he might settle his last business before proceeding. Their Majesties granted His Excellency Ulrich leave to hold his baronial court. Their Majesties now called Baron Ulrich Drachendonner to present himself before them. They also called for the heirs to the Barony Lord Gunnarr of the Endless Hills and Lady Barbary Rose of the Endless Hills to come forward and witness. Their Majesties thanked Baron Ulrich for his steady hand as he held the lands of the barony of the Endless Hills in trust for Them and for Their ancestors, knowing that the barony had grown and flourished under his leadership, and presented him with a gift basket that he might celebrate. But it was now time for him to step down and make way for others to carry this burden. Their Majesties removed the Baronial coronet from his head, and released him from his bonds of fealty to the kingdom and the barony. There being no leader of the Barony, Their Majesties called forward the Baronial Seneschale, Lord Tigernach mac Cathail, to counsel Them. Lord Tigernach verified that an election had been held in accordance with Kingdom Law, Corpora, and Baronial Policies, the populace had been polled and voted to remain a barony and had chosen Lord Gunnarr and Lady Barbary Rose of the Endless Hills to be their next Baron and Baroness. Their Majesties thanked Lord Tigernach for his service. Their Majesties then instructed Lord Gunnarr and Lady Barbary Rose to come forward and kneel. Their Majesties asked if they were prepared to take on the heavy burden of the coronets of the Barony of the Endless Hills. Their Majesties then crowned them as 5th Baron and Baroness and took their oath of fealty and service for their barony. Their Majesties recalled His Lordship Ulrich Drachendonner into Their court and created him a baron of the court in thanks for his stewardship of Their Lands of the Barony of the Endless Hills. Scroll limned by Lady Rota Egilsdottir and calligraphed by Lord Bjorn Bunhauss Olafsson. Their Majesties gave Their Excellencies leave to hold a baronial court, and even lent them the use of one of Their guards, Lord Po Silvertop the Rogue, to act as their herald. Their Majesties exchanged gifts with their Excellencies Gunnarr and Barbary Rose, and gifts with Her Majesty Brenwen of the East as well. Afternoon Court on the tournament field Their Majesties Awarded Arms to Will Deth for fencing and fighting and teaching the same to newcomers and work with melee tactics. Scroll illuminated and words by Lady Deianeira Rodriguez y Aragones with calligraphy by Baroness Barbary Rose. Evening court Their Majesties invited Her Majesty Brenwen of the East to join Them in court. Their Majesties gave leave to Their Excellencies Gunnarr and Barbary Rose to hold a baronial court. Their Majesties invited Her Majesty Brenwen to hold a royal Court. Baron Caleb Reynolds was called into court to speak as an ambassador for the Tribe Tuatha Fieren. He spoke of a conversation that he had had with Their Majesties about an old tradition of giving every new lord and lady a circlet from Their Majesties hands when they received and award of arms. In order for that tradition to be carried on he presented Their Majesties with 8 circlets made of leather with the promise of 32 more to be delivered as the tribe completes them. He also spoke of the Hael Brewers Guild and another conversation, and presented Her Majesty with 2 bottles of Peach Mead. Lady Lumanitsa the Oracle and Lady Dawn de la Lune were called forward and made a presentation of a gift basket to Their Majesties. Lady Lumanitsa was the autocrat and wished to thank all of her staff for the fabulous day. Their Majesties invited Lady Mariana Pietrosanti to come forward and assist with distributing toys to the youth in attendance at the event. Their Majesties summoned the Steel Therapy Rapier Company to Them and Named Lord Po Silvertop the Rogue, Lady Deianeira Rodriguez y Aragones, Khristian Pykh, and Lord Stefan Verdi Lulfskyn as border guards and presented each with letters of mark limned by the hand of Lady Fenris McGill. They were then charged to keep safe the eastern borders through river, sea and ocean from any threats and to deliver one full share of any booty seized as their taxes on such revenues. They did in return present Their Majesties with some of the aforesaid booty which had been collected in anticipation of this moment. Their Majesties called for Chernislava Alekseeva known as Nishka to attend Them. They had been impressed by her Taiko drumming, her skills in fencing, making her way into the semi finals at the Queen?s Rapier Challenge, and her willingness to travel great distances to serve on Her Majesty?s Guard. They were so moved that They Awarded her Arms. Scroll limned by Lady Mariana Pietrosanti, words by Lord Po Silvertop, calligraphy by Evangelos. Doovay de Vadasz was awarded arms for his service at demos, wearing armor in parades and standing as an example of chivalry, adding to the pageantry wherever he is. Scroll by Lady Marija Kotok upons words by Lord Eirik Goransson. Verica ingean Domnaill was awarded arms for her help in feast halls, setting tables, helping with shades and list trees upon the tourney fields, and her service in Mistress of the lists for the Shire of Sterlynge Vayle. This so moved Their Majesties that They also inducted her into the Order of the Keystone. Scroll limned by Lady Deianeira Rodriguez y Aragones, calligraphy by Dame George Anne upon a text by THLord Brandubh ? Donnghaile. Their Majesties instructed Their Guards to bring Lord Po Silvertop the Rogue before Them. Their Majesties charged Po that he did knowingly raise an army of fencers in the Barony of the Endless Hills, and that he did take it upon himself to train marshals to keep control of this army. Their Majesties could not allow this behavior to go unanswered and so They inducted him into the Order of the Keystone. Scroll limned by Lady Maria Caterina de Ravvenna, calligraphed by Lord Robert l?Etourdi, upon a text by Lady Meg the Mad and Lord Robert l?Etourdi. Their Majesites thanked all for coming and the staff of the event, and then Spoke of Inspiration, and how inspiration had recently come from the Kingdom of Northshield, where His Majesty Ziedfried had truly made Her Majesty Elizabeth a Princess Bride. Upon Consultation with Their Majesties of the East, Their Majesties Henri and Elena did make the following proclamation, knowing Her Majesty Elizabeth?s love for the movie the Princess Bride: The movie "The Princess Bride" may be considered a historical document for the duration of our reign and as such may be used as a citation without penalty. To that end, the words "melee team" may be replaced by "brute squad," vanquished fighters on the field may be referred to as "mostly dead," and all tourney rapier fighters are encouraged to fight one round either left handed or with six fingers as they prefer. We recognize that the Kingdom Flower of Northsheild will be the Buttercup for the duration of King Zigfried and Queen Elizabeth's reign. Quotation from the movie shall be encouraged by the crown. As this decree was read in court the response from the assembled populace in unison was "As you wish". Court Closed. Is it the Dread Pirate Roberts or Young gallant Wesley? So much can be concealed by a mask and so much more can be revealed. Is it mystery you desire, or is it merely desire you find mysterious? The Rhydderich Hael?s Masked Ball is at hand and you are welcome to don a mask and join us for one of the seasons most fashionable and festive masked balls Saturday December 05 at the Independent Health Youth & Family Center. The Center is located at 5005 Sheridan Dr. Williamsville, NY 14221. Site opens at 10AM and closes promptly at 9PM. This event will be full of live music, graceful dancing, fabulous foods, A&S competition showcasing masks, and swift skillful fencing. Let this magical place be inspired by the mask, moved by the music, intoxicated by the dance and sated by the feast. Who is truly hidden within when let loose by the diversion of the mask? Will the art of the flirtation rule the day? Will mischief and prank run wild? Will this be a day of Fairies and Fawns? It is a masquerade. It is an open invitation to create magic! Live Music will be performed throughout the day. Music for the Ball will be provided by Delftwood's amazingly talented itinerant musical troupe ExArca. The Haels own musicians will also be playing as well. Dance will also be featured and lessons will be given during the day. Don't dance you say? Well you can learn! The elegant and gracious Baroness Peregrine of Thescorre will be dance mistress for the evening, and will be giving dance lessons prior to the actual ball! Additional live music will be provided by Step in Time, local musicians and fellow SCAdians, during the sumptuous feast. For those that like to don less gentile mask and match it with rapier there will be a fencing tournament. Be inspired by love that day and remember, ?That I know something that you don?t know. I?m not left handed.? **wink** For the skilled and not so skilled artisans of the ball there will be an A&S competition. One will be for best mask and the other for best memorial. Be inspired when not literal and literal should you be inspired. As per the rules of the hall the site is bone dry. However, your spirits will have to de distilled from within. And it is strongly encouraged that your words and actions be the only thing found intoxicating by others. Caffeine is permitted by the venue and for a short time only, we will once again have access to the attached coffee house for your delicious hot and cold beverages. We are starting to get the arts & sciences information together and up on the web for reference. I will send a posting with the link to the information in the next few days. Until that time, I would like to announce a few changes. Below is the list of categories for entry. This may have a couple more tweaks and changes so keep an eye out for those. But, for now, notice the changes in the Woodworking category and the addition of the Accessories category! I am also pleased to announce that this year we will be recognizing the groups that have the most INDIVIDUALS entering the competition. Details are still being worked out, but I encourage the Arts & Sciences officers of the Shires, Baronies, Cantons, and Dominions to encourage your folks to enter the competition - even if it is just one entry! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at orianna at thescorre.org. Thanks! My name is Elaine Koogler, known in the Society as Minowara Kiritsubo. I have, as of the first of this year, taken over as Editor of the Compleat Anachronist. The CA is a pamphlet series, actually more of a booklet, that covers topics of interest to those who do historical research and recreation both in and out of the SCA. Each issue covers one subject, allowing for a more in-depth exploration. Subject matter in the past has ranged from a fictionalized account of life in an abbey to tavern songs to weaponry and armor. The Compleat Anachronist is your publication. We depend upon you to provide us with manuscripts to publish, and, to that end, I am asking for your assistance. If you have a project or interest that you would like to see a CA about or, even better, would like to write about, please contact me. If you can provide me with an outline or a complete description of what youd like to write about, that would be even better. Thanks so much for your assistance! There will be a coffee shop open onsite, yes: onsite. No running out in the cold for your latte fix. And have I mentioned a feast by the over-achieving, and much loved, Lady Tiercelin; a feast that will include bacon, beef, cheese and fully documentable mac n' cheese (and bacon), as well as healthy salads. I will be there, on the 5th, to stand (and maybe sit) as judge for best mask and best memorial. I will also be there to cross rapiers with any and all fencers who choose to attend and unlike my newly invested cousin, Baron Gunnarr, I won't charge you a buck for you to stab me.* There is also no better event happening on the 5th of December, so, please join me in a day of fun. Greetings from Solveig! I am thinking of applying for a job teaching East Asian History. I need to find three references. So, what do you think? Do you have an ed or history related job title or degree and think this is a worthwhile thing for me to do? If so, maybe you could write a reference letter. Unfortunately, I just found a position announcement which has a closing date in just a few days. Thank you very much for considering this request.
