I had the misfortune of going through a similar experience several years ago, although not as total as these poor folks. The best suggestion I can give for those wanting to help is not to give stuff, but to donate cash or gift cards (Wal-mart, Target, whatever they may have in their area), if you can afford to. They're easier to transport and store, you don't have to worry about sizes, and, perhaps most importantly, they get things they have chosen for themselves. It may not seem to be that big a deal, but when you are re-building like that, the fact that you can make decisions for yourself does a lot to help you get over the chaos and feel like you are back in control of your life. (Cash is also handy for paying off the last utility bills and such from the old place- not something I would have thought of until it happened to me.)
