The time has come to put together a class schedule for this weekend's metal symposium in Coppertree, and alas, I have gotten a class description/title and a schedule request from one teacher. There is a selection of non metal related classes going on at the event (see announcement below) and some folks from the East Kingdom have told me they are going to come teach millifiori glass techniques. If you are planning to teach, regardless of whether you are teaching a metal related class or not, please contact me so that I can assemble a schedule to help people plan so that they can attend all of the classes they came for. Thank you, THL John Michael Thorpe Coppertree Challenge: El Squid! * Date: June 5th - 7th, 2009 The Shire of Coppertree invites you to the Coppertree Challenge, June 5-7, at the spacious and comfortable Madison County Fairgrounds, 1968 Fairgrounds Road, Brookfield, NY 13314. The Duchess Sir Rowan de la Garnison will run the Coppertree Challenge Tourney, a traditional double-elimination tourney. The winner shall receive an invitation to the Amethyst Tourney. Lists open at 10; armor inspection is at 11, and fighting will follow. After the Challenge Tourney there will be silly fighting designed by Rowan. The silliness will include a platform tourney, a short and long distance tourney, and other bizarre gladiatorial games. Following the silly fighting, as time permits, there shall be a rousing game of Harp Seal, a game for everyone. No armor is required; we shall provide the duct tape. A cute, helpless, furry white animal with big brown eyes nervously awaits your competitive pleasures. We are pleased to host the AEthelmearc Metalsmith Guild's Second Metalsmithing Symposium at this event. A variety of classes and activities are in the works such as Bladesmithing, Jewelry Making, Historical Metalsmithing techniques and much more. Forge space is available; there will be plenty of room for indoor and outdoor work/instruction. For more details, or if you are interested in teaching a class, please contact THL Captain John Michael Thorpe [sunshadow at twcny.rr.com]. Aside from learning the arts of the metalsmith, we offer other useful classes for the SCAdian getting ready for Pennsic. THL Rowena nic Donnchaidh will bring sewing machines for an all-afternoon garb workshop and offer her expertise in garb construction; feel free to bring your fabric & projects and work on them. Mistress Morgan Silverlocke will offer an afternoon class on hand sewing for those who would learn the gentle arts of taming fabric by hand. Baron Master Daniel del Cavallo will hold an afternoon workshop to enlighten you in period beverages and their appropriateness for your persona. You can expect a nourishing breakfast both Saturday and Sunday and a tasty lunch on Saturday for all. A fine feast of Spanish food will be offered Saturday night, prepared by the Coppertree Cooks Guild, the Calamari Rouge, overseen by Sifrid der Blint and Mistress Mathilde des Pyrenees. I have been studying the rules posted to a Scadian's webpage, but the page dates back to 1994 and I doubt the fellow who wrote it can still be contacted through it. I have transcribed the rules for my own record and edited them for clarity, as I found much of the wording to be a bit confusing (it took me several re-readings before I finally thought I understood the rules!) However, I am not sure I got it all correctly. I would like someone who knows the game to look at my revisions and tell me if I have gotten something wrong or confused. In particular, I am concerned about how the rules describe how a hand of Primero comes to an end so that players can see who wins the hand. The original rules I studied are here: http://math.bu.edu/INDIVIDUAL/jeffs/primero.html And my version follows below. Any help is appreciated. Thank you. - Rubyn MakDonald, A&S Minister for Canton of Angels Keep Primero is an Italian Renaissance ancestor of Poker. It can be played by four to six people. The deck is a normal one of 52 cards, but with the 8s, 9s, and 10s removed. The remaining cards all have specific point values regardless of suit: face cards are worth 10 points, 2 through 5 are worth 10 points plus their apparent value, 6s and 7s count as three times their apparent value, and Aces are worth 16 points. For a simpler beginner's game, players may simply count 2 through 7 as just worth their apparent values, and Aces being worth 11 points (which is a more traditional and more familiar amount). All players ante up. Four cards are dealt face down to each player in the standard manner. Starting with the player to the dealer's left, each player has three options: Option A: Announce a bid. It consists of three things: the hand type, the point total, and amount to be wagered by the player on the hand. The hand type must be higher than the previously bid hand type or, if it is the same, the point total must be higher. The hand types are, in order of increasing rank: Numerus: two or three cards of the same suit Primero: one card of each suit Maximus: the Ace, Six, and Seven of one suit Fluxus: all four cards of the same suit Chorus: four of a kind Note that even though all face cards are worth the same, you must have four of the same type of face card to form a Chorus. For example, if a player had a 2 of Clubs, 3 of Diamonds, 4 of Spades, and King of Hearts, he would have a Primero (one of each suit) and his point total would be 12 + 13 + 14 + 10 = 49. If the player wishes to bet 10 chips, the bid is announced as "Primero 49 at 10." Any player to bid after him would have to beat a Primero 49, either by naming a higher rank (e.g., a Maximus) or a higher point total (e.g., "Primero 59"). Note that the point totals include only the total of the cards that make up the hand. For example, a Numerus point total could be as low as 20. Players may deliberately understate their point total or their hand type. For the above example, the first player can bid no higher than a Primero 49, but could claim to have, for example, a Numerus 49, or a Primero 40. In order to bid, the bet added to the pot by the previous player must first be matched (except for the first player since there is no one bidding before him). The sequence of play is: match the last person's bet, then announce the bid and add to the pot. When starting a turn, players only need to match the bet placed at the end of the previous player's bid. If the first player bid "Primero 49 at 10," the next player must first match the bet of 10, and then make a bid of his own. The bet at the end of this new bid does not have to be the same amount that was made at the end of the previous player's bid. A player's bid can be any amount he chooses and can afford to pay. The third player then matches the second player's bet before making his own bid, and so on. Option B: Match the bet from the end of the previous bid and keep one's hand. The player here does not need to announce what hand type or point value he holds (especially if he has already done so earlier in the hand), and no new bid needs to be made by the player. The player simply announces that he is matching the previous bid and keeping his hand. Option C: Passing. A player may pass without having to put any money down at all or make a bid. However, the player must discard one or two cards from his hand, and then draw the same number from the deck. As all the hands except Numerus and Maximus require four specific cards, this usually destroys the hand that a player holds. Note also that a player cannot "fold" out of a Primero hand. Thus, a player who passes may stay in the game without risking additional chips, but does risk destroying the hand he holds. If no one at all bids, the hand ends and the player with the highest hand type wins. If two players have the same hand type, the higher point total wins the pot (which in this case would have only the original antes). When any player makes a bid, the bet at the end of the player's bid must be covered by at least one other player. If someone else makes a bid, the player's bet is considered covered. However, if play returns to the person who last bid without being covered, the last person to pass must match that bet. The sequence of play for that last person is: pass, draw one or two cards, then match the solitary bet. The player who last made a bid must then prove to the player who was forced to match the bet that he has at least what he claimed. Note that in all cases, except Numerus and Maximus, this involves privately showing the player all four cards. After this, the player who was forced to match the bet may make a bid without naming his hand type or point total (in other words, a bid that is just another bet, but it still counts as a bid). If play returns to the player who was forced to stake without any additional bids, or if play returns to the last player to make a bid and the bid has been matched by all the other players without any new bids, the hand ends. Players reveal their cards, and the player with the highest hand, regardless of how they might have been understated, wins the pot. This weekend at War College, the wonderful Barony Marche of the Debatable Lands is affording us time and space with which to hold a largesse workshop. The primary focus will be projects for the Royal Pennsic gift exchange. There will be ample crafts on hand for everyone, even those who feel that they have no talent in the art arena. (Children are welcome, but will need responsible supervision, please.) We will need help with sewing, drawing, painting, and basic wirework. While I will supply all necessary materials, feel free to bring your own tools and supplies, if you so desire. The goal is to work on hoods, field banners and pennants, award medallions, as well as some simple jewelry and scroll blanks. Ideas for other projects are always welcomed and encouraged. *Anyone* can participate; you do not need to consider yourself an artisan, or have any particular skill set. I will have instructions on hand for each step of these projects. Nearly anyone can cut around a pattern, or paint within the lines, so please, if you find yourself looking for something to do, come and find me in the main hall, starting at 1 p.m. If you have any questions, or would like to help out but will not be able to make the workshop this weekend, please feel free to contact me at ladyren-at-gmail-dot-com. Visitors are welcome as long as they are willing to stay in persona while inside our boundary. There will be a bardic circle, weather permitting, any evening I am on site. Pieces performed do not have to be period, although period works are appreciated, but neither the piece nor its introduction should break the illusion--for instance by discussing whether the piece is in period. If you want to dip just a toe in the water, come visit. We can be found in W09, on the right side of Runestone hill going down. If you have any questions, email me. Greetings from Solveig! I publicly embarrassed somebody at El Squid this weekend. Later on, I was looking for her to apologize in person. However, I was unable to find her. I do hope that she will find it in her heart to forgive me. While publicly embarrassing someone is unconscionable, I will share with you that this has been a tough week for me starting on Thursday afternoon when someone ranted at me for about an hour and a half. Friday, was a ten hour wild goose chase involving some unfortunate business dealings. To cap things off, I collided with what I suspect was an already dead 50 pound dog on the way back to Syracuse. The car still works, but has extensive damage. The sky was dark, the road unilluminated, and the dog was black. The dog in question had no collar or other identification. So, stuff has been generally crappy since Thursday. Incidentally, the feast at El Squid was stellar. The list herald in #8 looks like David z Gury, who used to live in Ostgardr (and the two tabarded heralds in the background, by the pavilion, may be Arval Benicouer and Marten Broker). I'm pretty sure that the herald looking at the list shield stand in #30 is Master Stephan ap Cennydd (aka Stephen of Silverwing) -- wow, does he look young in that picture! I *think* the guys watching the tourney bout in #31 are Duke Siegfried von Halstern and Master Berowne of Arden (I'm actually pretty certain about Siegfried -- the other guy is half cut off, but I'm almost certain it is Berowne). Sorry I can't be of more help. However, I did not change any of these settings between the apology and the first bounce. Thus, I am sending a very short test message to see if the character count limit is less than advertised. Remember to set your reader to post plain text only. **************************************************************** Noble Cousins! Greetings from Solveig! Since several people have asked about the Mobile Tea Hut Project, I am posting a few details about how the design is progressing. The mailing list program initially rejected this message. My theory is that it rejects Asiatic characters. Consequently, titles and authors are being deleted. Well, I will try once again. The overall design is primarily based on three books:? 1.?(Historical Tea Houses with Architectural Drawings and Photographs)?447300077X? ?? ?http://www.worldcat.org/search?q=isbn%3A447300077X&qt=advanced? 2.?(A Manual on Designing Tea Houses)?4473009564? ?? ?http://www.worldcat.org/search?q=isbn%3A4473009564&qt=advanced 3.?The Japanese House: A Tradition for Contemporary Architecture by Heinrich Engel?0804803048 ?? ?http://www.amazon.com/Japanese-House-Tradition-Contemporary-Architecture/dp/0804803048/ However, I have a rather large library on Japanese architecture including books on making and repairing sliding paper doors, a series of books on Japanese detail architecture, histories of Japanese architecture, more books about tea rooms, &c. Now, here are the issues which motivated this posting. I was asked about the use of period materials and methods. 1. Japanese housing is still constructed using traditional Japanese units of measure which are different from either USA traditional English measure and metric. Consequently, it is difficult to buy building members with the correct measurements. What I have chosen to do is use measurements that are close to what the Japanese measurement would have been. This avoids having to custom mill every piece of exposed wood. 2. Reference number 2 states that the dimensions of the nijiriguchi (crawling entrance) should be greater than in historic buildings to accommodate the larger stature of modern Japanese. I have followed this advice. I have also increased the hight of standing entrances. 3. Many of the pre-1600 tea huts were constructed using round posts and beams. This only makes the situation worse. Regardless, rustic simplicity is the aesthetic goal of tea hut architecture. Thus, using easily obtainable rectangular members is more in the spirit of tea hut design than somehow obtaining round posts and beams. Further, there are examples of tea huts in Japan which do use rectangular posts and beams. 4. Pre-1600 Japanese tea huts had wattle and daub walls. Aside from the added difficulty of this construction method, I am concerned that it would not survive transport to Pennsic and around Pennsic due to vibration forces. 5. Ideally, the tea hut would be constructed using hinoki wood. This wood does not grow in North America. Further, it is sufficiently difficult to obtain in Japan that Japan imports Port Orford Cedar to substitute for hinoki wood. 6. Port Orford Cedar is difficult to obtain in the United States, and shingles made from this species would be a special order. Consequently, I intend to substitute White Cedar shingles which are a standard construction material in the United States which I believe would be a reasonable substitute for Port Orford Cedar shingles. Incidentally, shingled roofs are documentable. They allow a relatively steep pitch while being comparatively light and comparatively stable. The second reference above gives a chart of allowable roof pitch relative to roof type. 7. The walls will simulate the actual thickness and appearance of Japanese walls. However, they will employ stud-wall construction sheathed with plywood followed by Tyvec Stucco House Wrap. The final surface will be either stucco or a stucco substitute to simulate the daub used in an actual period building. Even so, the building will probably be stuccoed at Pennsic due to the risk of excessive vibration during transit. While I do have a recent Japanese book on how to build a house using joinery, none of the joinery is visible and this book actually departs from traditional building practice in several respects. This is particularly the case in the roof structure. Pre-modern buildings frequently employed floating unhuwen beams. The ceiling also presents a number of engineering problems if I were to preserve accuracy. Again, the visible part of the ceiling will look correct, but the inner structure will be somewhat simplified. 8. Due to the confined dimensions of a trailer bed, several other modifications became necessary. Thus one of the standing sliding doors is located inside the tea room instead of outside the tea room and another is effectively a pocket door. Also, the doko (a kind of small closet) is raised above floor level in order to clear the wheel well. I could have left the doko out, but I included it to solve a very serious potential problem involving the limited dimensions outside the host entrance. 9. Since I also have to live inside this structure at Pennsic, I have included more storage areas than commonly found in tea rooms and have included a kind of built-in desk. As it stands, even with the simplifications given above, people have told me that the project is beyond the capability of a number of builders in the Society. Good Gentles, with Pennsic rapidly approaching, I write to inform you of Their Majesties? need for retainers at this event. Pennsic is a busy and hectic place, and if many people would be generous enough to contribute a short amount of time, it could prevent exhaustion on the part of a small retaining crew. It is my position to solicit volunteers from throughout this great Kingdom to attend to our Royalty at this Pennsic War. I understand that retaining is not for everyone, however it is, for many, an exciting and privileged opportunity. This is especially true for those people new to the SCA who may not be running from meeting to meeting and battle to battle at Pennsic. Note that Their Majesties are mindful of your good works and encourage individuals to wear their personal heraldry and/or colors while retaining for Them so they may show the diversity of AEthelmearc. Special livery will be provided to indicate the rank of royal retainers while on duty. If you are interested, please contact me and we can decide on your preferred day/time (first come, first served) and I will send additional information. Those people who are interested in attending Their Majesties will be given a schedule, as well as instruction regarding the basic responsibilities of a royal retainer. I look forward to hearing from you regarding these positions. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or comments. I am always looking for good articles for the Florilegium. If you have researched a little known subject in our period or you practice a little known art or craft writing an article is an excellent way to introduce others to the work you've done. I'm especially interested in academic papers written for A&S contests because, unfortunately, few have time at such an event to read them. Even the judges. Getting them published in the Florilegium lets your hard word benefit the entire Known World. My standard policy is that the copyright remains with the author and I will accept updates or removal requests at any time. So you don't have to wait until you have that "perfect" article. You can update it as you learn more. In the meantime, folks can be learning from your paper and you might get some good, useful feedback. Even if your article has been previously published elsewhere, I'm happy to consider it. Not everyone around the Known World has seen your kingdom's A&S issue or your local group's newsletter. I'm happy to give credit to the publication where an article was first published by adding a notation to an article. Thanks, Stefan ----------- A Blending of the Past and Present Over the past nineteen years in an ongoing effort, I have been collecting bits of useful information from various newsgroups, mail lists and articles submitted to me by their authors. In order to make this information available to others, I have placed this information in a collection of files I call Stefan's Florilegium. The Florilegium is on the web at: http://www.florilegium.org I have added an RSS feed for the Florilegium website. If you are already reading RSS feeds, please add the Florilegium RSS feed to find out when new and updated files as well as new features get added to the website. If you are unfamiliar with RSS, or Real Simple Syndication, it is a method built into many web browsers, and also available as a separate tool, which alerts you when the contents of your favorite websites have been changed. I am always interested in new articles. If you have written an article that would be of interest to others in the SCA, please send it to me for possible inclusion in the Florilegium. A&S documentation and class handouts will also often work out well. I am especially interested in A&S papers. I am Lord Valdis of Gotland, coordinator of the Pennsic Memorial Runestone. I would like to take a quick minute to describe our project and let you know how you can make a contribution financially or physically. This is a community project, in the sense that the community of Pennsic 38, you will be carving the stone with the assistance of some carvers who will be on hand. The stone is approximately 9 tons and will stand over 7 feet tall when erected. The wording is as follows, ' The People of the Folk-Assembly (Society) raised this stone in order to give honor to those who have walked these fields and fallen. We will meet again.' Written and translated into runes by Magistra Fiana of Clare. The artwork will includes viking elements of war and passage into an afterlife. There will be no religious references or personal names on the stone as it honors all who have walked with us. Each day for 4 hours we will have the runestone available for anyone to carve upon the stone. The artwork will be laid out already and tools will be provided as well as instruction with practice stones available for you to become comfortable with carving before moving to the main stone. For those groups that wish to carve together whether in memory of someone or socially, we will block off time for groups of 10 or more. Whether you want to carve the stone in memory of someone or simply to have the opportunity to carve a period style stone with period tools, you are welcome. Now, financials...unfortunately these types of projects cost money. For the tools, insurance, stone and delivery of the stone we need to raise around $6000 (six thousand dollars) in a short amount of time. For those individuals that donate a hundred dollars or more we will have a pendant in the shape of the runestone in bronze casted by Crafty Celts, for those individuals that donate two hundred dollars we will have the same pendant in silver, again casted by Crafty Celts. While six thousand dollars seems like alot to raise in less than two months it is less than a hundred individuals who feel moved to help sponsor this worthy cause. Any donation in any amount is needed and appreciated. Donations made be made at PayPal using our email address of pennsicrunestone at hotmail.com or you may go to www.pennsicrunestone.com and link PayPal from there. I will be posting more to the Pennsic runestone website as we move forward. The site is designed as a blog so we may discuss different elements of the runestone but more importantly I want to hear stories of our members who have passed and why you are inspired to donate or help carve with your hands...remember you do not have to donate to carve on the stone although your financial support is appreciated. Please help spread the word of this project by forwarding to SCA list and friends so that we may reach our goal quickly and have the stone delivered and honor those scadians who are no longer with us. I started the site when Jacopo was Archer General as a favor to him and because there was no easy place to find Kingdom archery related information and current scores. The scores have long sinced moved to http://scores-sca.org/home and the Archer General has changed twice. The relevance of the site and my motivation have both dwindled and I find that I dislike the petty politics and over-regulation of volunteers. If you're interested in the job, I suggest discussing it with the Archer General, Fintan. And trust me when I say, it is a thankless job. The site at http://www.capnmac.com/archery will continue on with some SCA archery related theme but in an unofficial capacity. I thank all of you who have at one time or another enjoyed perusing my pages. -- Cetach Fitzgibbon An Saghdeoir Scanr?il sin "Tig leat rith ach n? ach tuirseach a fhaighidh t? b?s." Also, because they're slides, they're all mirror images - I noticed it when saying "Hey! Sugitori's not left-handed" (when fighting Morguhn). The Dragon will be set up at space 103 and children may begin arriving beginning at 10:00 a.m. Parents are welcome to stay for the activity, but are not required to do so. You may sign your child over to us for the duration of the activity - approximately 2 and half hours - or less time if needed. Due to the event being held at an open campground, we ask that all children be signed in and out by a parent for safety and our peace of mind if they are left in our care. An option we are happy to provide is that following the service of the meal to Their Majesties, we will gladly return to the Dragon so that the children may make their own lunch. This also gives us a chance to go over how things went and any other content areas the children want to discuss further. There will be some plants available to the children to take home to start or add to their own kitchen gardens. This activity does involve the use of simple kitchen equipment (knives, peelers) with sharp edges by the children. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact anyone from the household.
