[SCA-AE] Event Conflict

I agree with Her Excellency about setting dates.  It is often the case that there is a fabulous site that is available on the weekend before or after the "preferred" weekend (but not on the preferred date).  If we set dates in law, we will be hemmed in in those situations and may have to settle for a less desirable site.  In the larger urban areas where good sites are often booked a year in advance (for weddings, parties, etc.) set dates could be a significant problem.  I do feel that we should specifically avoid setting more than "preferred" dates for Coronations... In those cases, law requires the presence of 4 individuals for the event (and the transfer of the Crowns) to occur.  Given "real world" considerations, it's nice to be able to shift the date as needed.  It also allows the Heirs to try and get the site they really want.  Over the years I have come to understand that for many Crown Combattants, the "Coronation Fantasy" is almost as strong a daydream as some ladies have of their wedding day.  I'd hate for someone to have to settle for a VFD hall when a gothic church is available the next weekend!

I also agree with Her Excellency about flexibility being one of our strengths.  It is why we don't need reference binders in court to make Peers.  It is why we are very effective on the field even when circumstances require units to regroup with other units.  It is why we do such a great job with everything that subjects of Æthel
mearc do at Pennsic.  Let's not give up our flexibility when it comes to event dates.

Better communication could be key in making this work better.  I wonder if it would make sense to make an autocrats' discussion list?  That way potential autocrats could post proposed events or events they are considering so that dates could be discussed more effectively and openly.  Just a stray thought.... It could work well or might generate more angst than it's worth!

why can't the Kingdom change its laws to put the Coronations, Twelfth Night, &
rown >_DATES_ in law.
Personal opinion--because some people are required to go to those events, and
hat means they have to be able to. I firmly believe that the less we put into
aw, the better, because you never know what might happen.
or instance, we had to change our coronation site at the last minute for
arious reasons. Having the flexibility to pick from two or three dates meant we
ould get a good replacement site when it might have been booked the rest of the
ime.
We do not (or at least I do not) want AEthelmearc to become as set in stone as
ome of the other kingdoms. It makes changing things and doing new things
ncredibly difficult. One of the most wonderful things about this kingdom is
hat it has flexibility an
d people aren't forever saying "We can't do that,
ecause this is the way we've ALWAYS done it".
