[SCA-AE] Conflicting events (was change of dates for HarvestRaid)

If an event is planned to be small and local, then the autocrat should
be able to plan for costs that allow the event to at least break even or
even make some money.

I think we need to keep a mix of small/local and large/regional events.
Going to just an event locally is fun and fine, but I think you miss the
larger picture of the Kingdom, miss the interaction with others outside
of your area, the chance to meet and interact with others in the arts or
on the field or on the ranges.

We have some events that are, almost by tradition now, large regional
events. I count AEthelmearc War Practice, Blackstone Raids, Harvest
Raid, and Ice Dragon as the ones I can think of off the top of my head
(not counting the Kingdom events of course).

Of course, more events put more burden on the Crown and Kingdom officers
to ensure proper service to the local population. Of course, having 2
Crowns and Heirs does help to spread the wealth : )

I don't think Sylvan Glen and Harvest Raid should be considered
conflicts as they are really at opposite ends of the Kingdom. It does
make it tough for the Crown to decide between the two if necessary.
Archers to the Wald would be a conflict so I hope that the autocrats can
eventually work out arrangements for the future.

I have to say that I vacillate between thinking more small events would
be good and thinking one big event at a time is better.? On the one
hand, more local folks might go to the smaller specialty?events.? On the
other hand, if there was a big multi-activity event 3?hours away
opposite nothing else, would people be more likely to attend that?? When
there are lots of little events or medium sized events in a weekend I
worry that each one has a larger chance of not breaking even.

A good thing for us all to be thinking and talking about!

I'm afraid that given the size of the Kingdom and the number of groups
who
hold "traditional" events, the available dates for new, transitional or
'non
traditional' events is slim to none.

Add to that the state of the economy, the unstable prices of fuel, and
the
diminishing travel schedule of the average SCAdian and we will soon be
forced to modify the way we look at how we schedule events and the
process
we use that allow or disallow conflicting events.

Is there a way to address the potential conflicts? Common sense would
suggest that bordering groups or regions not hold competing events on
the
same weekend. However, if there are two events that cater to different
segments of the populace (for example an archery event conflicting with
a
gold chain tourney) I see no reason why they could not run concurrently.
>From what I have seen, event attendance has been slowing declining for
the
past couple of years. Perhaps if there were events closer to home, more
gentles would participate rather than choosing to stay home and avoid a
longer and more costly commute.

I am not saying that we should do away with traditional events, I am
just
suggesting that the available dates for new events are getting pretty
slim
and we may want to reexamine how we are doing things sooner rather than
later.
