I am always looking for good articles for the Florilegium. If you have researched a little known subject in our period or you practice a little known art or craft, writing an article is an excellent way to introduce others to the work you've done. I'm especially interested in academic papers written for A&S contests because, unfortunately, few have time at such an event to read them. Even the judges. Getting them published in the Florilegium lets your hard word benefit the entire Known World. I have just heard that the GeoCities free websites are going away. If you have such a site with SCA-type files and don't wish to move to the pay version, the files that you have worked so hard to produce, may make a good addition to the Florilegium. I am in the process of moving several articles on tablet weaving by Eve the Just from GeoCities to the Florilegium and would be happy to consider more. My standard policy is that the copyright remains with the author and I will accept updates or removal requests at any time. So you don't have to wait until you have that "perfect" article. You can update it as you learn more. In the meantime, folks can be learning from your paper and you might get some good, useful feedback. Even if your article has been previously published elsewhere, I'm happy to consider it. Not everyone around the Known World has seen your kingdom's A&S issue or your local group's newsletter. I'm happy to give credit to the publication where an article was first published by adding a notation to an article. Several months ago I added an RSS feed to the Florilegium so readers could get ongoing, immediate updates for the Florilegium. This does take a fair amount of work each time a file is updated. If you are using this feature, please let me know so I know whether to spend the time to continue creating it. Thanks, Stefan ----------- A Blending of the Past and Present Over the past nineteen years in an ongoing effort, I have been collecting bits of useful information from various newsgroups, mail lists and articles submitted to me by their authors. In order to make this information available to others, I have placed this information in a collection of files I call Stefan's Florilegium. The Florilegium is on the web at: http://www.florilegium.org I have added an RSS feed for the Florilegium website. If you are already reading RSS feeds, please add the Florilegium RSS feed to find out when new and updated files as well as new features get added to the website. If you are unfamiliar with RSS, or Real Simple Syndication, it is a method built into many web browsers, and also available as a separate tool, which alerts you when the contents of your favorite websites have been changed. I am always interested in new articles. If you have written an article that would be of interest to others in the SCA, please send it to me for possible inclusion in the Florilegium. A&S documentation and class handouts will also often work out well. I am especially interested in A&S papers. If you brew, please come out with your wares and show off your skill. We'll be holding a brewing competition with the following categories: * Best over all * Best cordial * Best meade * Best wine * Best beer If a category has 2 or less entrants, that category will be made into a display rather than competition. (after all, a non-competitive display may be interesting, but only one fellow competitor does not make for a fun competition. ) If you aren't much for competitions, come out and show us what you have been working on. We'll also do a class for those interested on the making of quick drinks for events. Such as quick meades, cordials etc. This information has been cleared by the Autocrat, and the announcement about Investiture will have an update to include this information in it as well. ________________________________ Herre Eirik Haarfager Goransson / Rob Baldassano Member, Barony of Endless Hills; Marshal - at Large & Deputy Baronial Marshal; House Odlahorde; Viking ; VROC #5029 (Tigger) ---------------------------- Come see our online store, now available at: http://shop.dracowolf.com =============== From shropcop at gmail.com Sat Aug 8 15:14:41 2009 From: shropcop at gmail.com (Fred Eaton) Date: Sat, 8 Aug 2009 15:14:41 -0400 Subject: [SCA-AE] =?iso-8859-1?q?ISO_Sir_Aengus_MacBain_=28Lord_Fridrich_F?= =?iso-8859-1?q?lu=DFm=FCllner=29?= Message-ID: <31362_1249758892_n78JEpPo022152_bca1f3d70908081214r18ff2ea8t2a97387166890d36@mail.gmail.com> Would Sir Aengus please contact me off list? The Board is seeking a team of enthusiastic individuals to help the SCA to create and implement a one year plan to get a census-level survey in the field that would cover the major topics that confront us, including "pay for" issues, award structure as well as quantitative, qualitative, motivational, and behavioural demographics such as age, gender, activities & interest areas, and reasons for joining & remaining in the SCA. "Census-level" means we are attempting to reach each and every participant of the SCA be they member or non-member. A census-level survey will enable us to understand our participants for purposes of marketing, recruitment, grant writing, and planning. It will give us a good, non-anecdotal idea of whom and what we currently are and are becoming. It will enable us to plan for the short term and the long term. Most importantly, it will provide information which will lead to better solutions to the problems the SCA and its Board are facing. Keep in mind that all the individual responses collected will be kept confidential and not sold or shared. All data to be collected or published will remain completely anonymous. The ideal team member will have: A solid background in research Skills in survey development, statistical data analysis, data mining Experience with different online survey systems and/or analytical software such as SPSS Strong analytical skills The ability to work as a team and meet deadlines Responsibilities will include: Development of objectives, concepts, and other broad aspects Selection of survey and analytical systems Development, design, programming, testing and fielding of questionnaires Analysis of results, and creation of presentations, including graphs, findings, and actionable recommendations Posting of all findings and raw data online The Census SCA 2010 Committee will report directly to the Board (via Ombudsman) as well as interfacing with other members of the Corporate Officer Staff (President, Society Seneschal, Treasurer, etc). One committee member will be selected by the Board of Directors to act as the Census Committee Chair and Project Manager. Please email your SCA and Modern Resumes to directors at sca.org. Grant Writing Committee Member and Committee Chair The Board is seeking a handful of motivated individuals to help the SCA seek alternative funding possibilities through grants. Responsibilities include: Create, design, and implement a grant writing proposal process for the SCA. Identify and target grant programs for which the SCA could qualify including researching where to find appropriate funding. Other tasks could include creating a common grant application format as well as exploring the possibility of outsourcing to a professional grant writing consultancy. The Grant Committee will report directly to the Board (via Ombudsman) as well as interfacing with other members of the Corporate Officer Staff (President, Society Seneschal, Treasurer, etc). One committee member will be selected by the Board of Directors to act as the Census Committee Chair and Project Manager. The Board is seeking individuals with grant writing experience and who understand the grant application process. Individuals should have superior writing and grammar skills, as well as the ability to work independently and meet deadlines. Also important are an attention to detail and the ability to understand financial and budgetary matters. Please email your SCA and Modern Resumes to directors at sca.org. The Champions Battle, also known as the East vs. Middle, invited only participants who are a current or previous champion. Thus, the competition was a difficult one. The throw consisted of six targets with two throws for each weapon. With twelve competitors per side, twenty-four in total, victories were hard fought and each challenge was mighty. However, only one can be triumphant in the end. It is with great pride that I announce that the victor was none other than our own THL Augusto Giuseppe da San Donato (Joe the Just), coming in first place! Furthermore, In the Known World Thrown Weapons Competition, THL Augusto Giuseppe da San Donato (Joe the Just) came in first place in Known World Thrown Spear. THL Constantine Blackhart came in first place in Known World Thrown Knives. And if that wasn?t enough good news? Master Charles of Alden fought long and hard in the 2-Handed weapon throw. He initially tied for 1st place. After no less than *7* sudden-death matches, came in second place by a mere half-inch! There was, in addition, a Night Throw, which consisted of glow sticks wrapped around the weapons and on the targets in which THL Constantine Blackhart was victorious! Vivat x 3 for each of our triumphant competitors! Congratulations to both the individuals and the Barony for having such fine and talented gentles among us! I would like to take a minute to thank everyone who assisted in Set-up and Tear down of AE Royal this year as well as AEthelmearc Court. These were momentous tasks and could not have happened without YOUR support. YOU made it possible for us all to enjoy a wonderful encampment that hosted one of the most exciting AEthelmearc parties in years! (Cow jousting!) YOU made it possible to hold order meetings, teas, and dinners. YOU made it possible for Aethelmearc to have a Hospitality Tent/Gate where not only folks could get information but also rest when weary (or rained on!). I hesitate to attempt to name names of individuals who helped out, you know who you are. Knights, newcomers, and children all - you have my deepest gratitude. I would challenge all of AEthelmearc to spend an hour next year in either setting up or tearing down AEthelmearc Royal. Imagine if every person spent just a fraction of time in this task how quickly it would occur and the sense of pride that you will have when someone says "Now that's a Royal encampment". Lastly I would thank Their Majesties and Their Highnesses for their support and hard labor. I thought it was a rare flare-up of my allergies to begin with but when I got home, the symptoms persisted... Oddly enough, it really started (for me) right after those Apache helicopters did those aerial acrobatics. It got so bad that I had to make a town run Thursday afternoon because the allergy/ cold stuff at Cooper's store did nothing to help. How many others were "fine" for the first few days of Pennsic and suddenly got similar symptoms from Thursday morning onward? Hope everyone who went to Pennsic is recovered and had a great time! The Canton of Angels Keep will be holding another Arts and Sciences meeting on Monday, August 17th. This time 'round Lady Juliana Stafford will be holding a scriptorium. This will be good introduction for newcomers as well as good practice for those who are not so new, as the specific areas to be covered include both a guide to Ames lettering as well as beginner's calligraphy. As usual our meeting is held in the basement meeting hall of the Unitarian Universalist Church from 7:00 PM until 10:00 PM at latest. The church is located at 607 North Seward Avenue, Auburn NY 13021. Come and learn to be a scribbler, or just bring your own project and enjoy good company! First and foremost I want to thank all the marshals and parents from AEthelmearc who were so supportive of the Youth Combat Program and our Kids this year. Much fun was had by all largely due to your continued support. In particular I would like to thank Duchess Dorinda, Sir Aengus, Mistress Yvianne, Lady Zoe, Lord Kostantinos and Lady Nivah for their particular assistance. I offer a special thank you to Mistress Amaryllis for being on hand for our tournaments to cover first aid and to lend helping hands to the MOL. I am sure there are some folks I am forgetting here but please know that anyone and everyone who helps to support the AEthelmearc Youth Fighters has a big gold star in my book :0) Congratulations to Aaron the Swift, Tom of Hunter's Home and Raphael of the Middle for their victory in the Division 2 East/Middle 3 Man Melee Tourney. Congratulations to Rouland of Willowbrooke and Aengus MacBain for their victory in the adult/youth tag team tourney, Division 3. Congratulations to Ian Kennoven and Aaron the Swift for their victory in the adult/youth tag team tourney, Division 2. Special thanks again to Mistress Amaryllis and Lady Suilean for a FANTASTIC job of running the first AEthelmearc Youth/Adult Tag Team Tourney. It was amazingly well run, especially considering that the marshal staff who thought up the tourney weren't sure how it was going to all turn out! Congratulations to Aaron the Swift, Tom of Hunter's Home, Thorstein Thorgrimmson , Oswin of the East and Gar of the Middle Kingdom in the Division 2 Atlantian/AEthelmearc 5 Man Melee Tourney. Congratulations to Rouland of Willowbrooke for (to the best of my knowledge) becoming the first youth combatant in the Society to complete the 1,000 bout challenge. I also want to thank Sir Alonzio, Sir Callidus and THL Vladimir Mechnik for taking time from their own busy schedules to teach various classes on the youth combat field. Your presence and you interest are very greatly appreciated. Finally I'd like to say that I am looking forward to next Pennsic (although I am willing to wait for it ;0) and another great year of youth combat activities in the Kingdom. Here is a chance to gather with your comrades at arms, and try your skills against those same comrades for honor and glory. While we cannot ask of youth the same charity commitment as their parents, and none is required, we do encourage a token donation of toy or coin. Loaner gear will be available, and practice and tourney will be on Saturday, August 29. For directions, registration, and other details, see the Steltonwald.org website. The Shire of Sterlynge Vayle welcomes all back to the new Damp Dragon Inn for Bards and Bows on September 12, 2009. This event will be held at Camp Amahami, 434 Page Pond Road, in Sanford NY. This is the same beautiful site where Barony Wars is held. (Hopefully it will be a lot drier!) The site opens at 8:00 AM and closes when everything is clean on Saturday night. Anyone still lingering after 9:00 PM will be pressed into service for site clean up. To encourage you to arrive early to enjoy the full day?s activities, there will be a pancake and egg breakfast for a small charge from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. ? Though this event does focus on archery, we will not be ignoring those who want to whack people with big sticks. We are planning a heavy weapons tourney, as well as fencing combat. ? In keeping with the bardic theme of the event, we are hosting performance events, such as music, singing, and poetry recitals. Bards, come and sing for your supper! Anyone wishing to teach a Bardic or Archery class is encouraged, just contact the Autocrats. Merchants are welcome with no fee, but an item donated to the silent auction is encouraged. It can be hard to tell from photographs, but the shade of blue really does look like it may have been produced using wode. Blue of about that shade does show up often enough in period heraldry that I suspect that it is from a commonly available source. I agree with Solveig's thought that the brilliant blues and other colors found in heraldry & manuscripts of the day can be taken as evidence of the ability to reproduce those colors in paints & inks, as well as dyes. The darkest one is the one most prized by medieval illuminators and expensive even by modern standards. $71 for 3 oz..of real lapis pigment compared to $8 for the same weight of modern ultramarine pigment Much like olive oil, the still useable later extractions are produced in higher quantities and less expensive. The brighter, more intense blue prominent in the reconstruction, for the most part is not the premium grade. It is closer to the "standard" quality lapis pigment . Even standard grade lapis is a costly material (but a steal at and about half the price of premium grade) It would have been comparable to the price of gold during the middle ages. I doubt any of us would have been surprised had the chairs, cabinets or bed been gilded. Thanks for sharing the site. The reconstruction looks absolutely amazing. The previous site (Dorseyville Fire Hall) has sadly been torn down to make way for a newer and updated Fire Station. You must bring your own raw materials, preferably things you have at home- no going out and purchasing new supplies. Documentation is not necessary or required, but extra points will be awarded to those who provide documentation. I must apologize for it seems that some information for the event is incorrect or missing from the event announcement. Please repost this to group lists so that the information is available to members who may not be on the Kingdom list. Corrections: The site closes at 9 pm, not 10 pm. Anyone left at the site after 9 will be handed a broom or dishrag & will be put to work. The site fee is free to children 5 & under, not just 2 & under. Additions: We're missing two bits of information that I believe folks would find useful- actual directions to the site & information on the Kingdom Arts & Sciences Competition, which is being held at Coronation. First, directions: Directions from the South: Proceed north on I-79 through to Erie, PA. Take Exit 183A (PA-5 E, 12th St) & proceed East on 12th Street for two miles until you come to Peach St. Take a left onto Peach. The site will be on your left. Directions from the West & East: Take I-90 to I-79. Turn north on 79 towards Erie & follow the directions above. There are a number of parking lots next to the site & across the street. Some have parking meters & meters are active in Erie on Saturdays. One lot next to the site is used by a school for its students & they do have Saturday classes- this lot is marked. Also, most of the streets in downtown Erie are one-way, including the street the site is on, so be mindful of signs. The A&S information from Master Thorpe, current Kingdom A & S Champion. Questions about the competition should be directed to him at sunshadow -at- twcny.rr.com It is with eager anticipation of the great Pennsic War and all of the wonderful learning opportunities present there between classes, artisans demonstrating their works, and the greatest concentration of our SCA culture in the known world that I send greetings on this cool summer evening. AS A&S Champion to Their Majesties Maynard and Liadain I have been contemplating how to best ensure that they have been well served in their A&S community. I have seen many wonderful works by their talented subjects. I have been discussing with Their Highnesses what they would like to see for their A&S Champion when they inherit the Sylvan thrones, and one thing we came up with was diversity of talent, and not being afraid to try new mediums. With this in mind, I am pleased to announce a Kingdom A&S championship that is something new. The competition for the next Kingdom A&S Champion will involve entering something that is your best work, which will be judged as Their Highnesses see fit, additionally to enter you must also make an attempt at something completely out of your fields of knowledge and document that attempt (please bring any results as well, they will not be judged unless you request that they be) If the attempt is musical or performance, please limit it to approximately 3 minutes as there will be many demands on Their Highnesses time. Their Highnesses are planning a Crusades and Crusaders theme for their reign, and while not requiring that entries or attempts follow that theme, it would please them greatly, as would donating the entries (after the competition) as largess The directions & full event announcement can also be found here: http://www.stormsport.org/subpages/Events.html And once again, I do apologize for any inconvenience or confusion this has caused. Have you considered using the site for Children's Crusade? At *least* as much hall space at Raccoon State Park as at the Castle, with (conservatively) 100x as much outdoor space. Plenty of room for the archers, fighters (of both ilks), youth fighters (oops - a third!), and trails for those who are "lovers, not fighters" to stroll. Cabins. With pavilions, room for vigils (I think I heard there's a peer to be made).
