[SCA-AE] Choc. Milk truth -- WAS: Tragedy is relative

Greetings from Tigranes,

I've always found a twinge of evil amusement whenever this subject is
brought up, with all those who swear undying devotion to this product.
This amusement comes from my knowlege of the real story of chocolate milk.

Commercially bottled chocolate milk starts out as regular milk on the store
shelves. When milk reaches it's "sell by" date, it's sent back to the
creamery. The expired milk is then repasturized, mixed with some fresh
milk, and chocolate flavor added to cover the possible "off" flavor from the
expired milk. Then bottled and shipped for sale.

I have this info directly from a former Dairylea processing chemist, so it
is not urban legend. I emphsize that the milk is NOT spoiled or unsafe.
But I always wonder how many of the Pennsic ambrosia enthusiasts have
reached to the back of the milk cooler in the store because the bottles in
the front were too close to the "sell by" date (I know I have, but I don't
like chocolate milk).

I know this won't deter any of the addicted. I just wanted to tell why I'll
always have a wry grin on my face whenever I hear folk sing the praises for
chocolate milk.

Yours,

Baron Tigranes of Bezabde
