Yes.  All concerned will now participate in an elaborate mummery with a scripted outcome, designed to ensure that what everyone wants to see happen can actually happen.  The law has been revealed as an ass, and now everyone must dance to its braying as they are compelled to put aside substance to observe the form.

Whom, exactly, is served by a law that enlists good folk into hypocrisy, merely to ensure a just outcome following an honest mistake?
