Lady your response to this issue has caused me to throw off the cloak of
lurking that I normally wear. I believe that this issue is not one of who is
right and who is wrong (not that your response tried to make it seem that
way). It would appear to be one of real life taking precedence over our
"game" and a set of rules that we have in place to ensure the consistency of
said "game."
Their Majesties of the Midrealm were going through a tough time and their
membership lapsed. I'd be willing to bet that the Kingdom Seneschal did know
when their membership was going to lapse and was probably in contact with
them to ensure that they renew. I can guess (although I don't know) that if
it is the Kingdom Seneschal's duty to keep tabs on such things, s/he most
likely did. The BoD is required to immediately terminate their reign. They
certainly did their job. It is a bad situation from the start and it's only
being made worse by "dissing" the BoD or anyone else involved. Mistakes
happen, real life happens and sometimes it just plain sucks.
I feel for Their (former, soon to be current again) Majesties of the
Midrealm. I've never served as a Kingdom official, I've only held local
offices, but I can imagine the angst TRM must feel towards the BoD right
now. What must be remembered is that they are only doing the job that we
created them for. We, the Populace, nominated the members of the Board so
some of us must have faith in them. Was the BoD being mean? No more so than
the police officer that pulls you over for exceeding the speed limit. You
might feel, from your point of view, that it's mean but the fact of the
matter is that rules were set in place for a reason and actions must be
taken when those rules are broken.
I would hope that in later years, if such situations ever come up again,
they might be handled differently. I also hope sincerely that no one truly
challenges Sir Lutr and that he and his Lady wife may resume where they left
off (is it okay to "take a fall" in Crown?).
Lady Brianna mentioned that we do not/cannot vote on these issues. Would it
be nice? Yes. Practical? Not really. I do not know the current membership of
the Society, but think how difficult it would be to get a vote from
everyone. The most efficient way to handle such things would be to create
new offices at least at the Kingdom level, probably for Baronies as well,
that would handle such votes. And how would we handle the actual voting?
Believe it or not, not everyone has 24x7 access to a computer so it wouldn't
be prudent to do it electronically. But think of all the paper work involved
with a paper vote. Would the groups have to hold special meetings for each
vote? Which issues would the Populace be allowed to vote on? Representatives
in the BoD, tally officials, chads, voting machines....
Yours in service,
Lady Meg the Mad!!!

The laws are very clear about membership requirements for Royals, and we
have seen incidents before where that law had to be invoked.
I am wondering where the Kingdom Seneschal was in all of this. Don't they
check memberships before Crown?
I would think the K.S. would have kept an eye on the Royals' membership due
dates.
And of course, an immediate membership is available if you renew online, so
it could have been taken care of before getting to this point.
I also think that dissing the BOD on this one takes away from Their Former
Majesties' laudable conduct,
particularly in taking responsibility for their own actions.
Kudos to them, the Midrealm for rallying behind them, and the Soc.
Seneschal, the BOD and Duke Palymar for finding a solution that keeps the
law intact and helps the Middle to move forward.

sent
to the Board of Directors of SCA, Inc., I would strongly encourage you
to take into account the whole story (go find the Middlebridge archives,
etc.), your own past experiences with the Office of the Registry, and
the modern alternatives now available.
