Well, in my experience.. people tend to be ok with
sitting on benches.  I think because benches aren't
usually reserved or anyone's special chair?

If you use benches, a simple note at troll that
benches are for everyone's use should work.

If you have chairs marking them with ribbons (as
already suggested) or with a populace badge somewhere
on it might work as well.  Again, my suggestion would
be to post this at troll, whatever you decide to do. 
:)

If you try something and it works, even so/so for the
first attempt, it will be easier the next time, etc..

I grew up knowing that if benches were set out, that
anyone could use them, so I may be unduly influenced
in that area.  :)  I'm also biased since when the
kingdom benches were made, I had the hope that they
would/could be used more often then War
Practice/Pennsic, perhaps at other events like
Coronation and Crown.. with the current royalty's
permission (i.e. they didn't have something else in
mind for them).  :)

Benches won't work for everyone, but they do work for
a lot of us.. and perhaps that way we'll need less
chairs for those that need a back, etc.  

I think the hard part with chairs is the fact that
most of us worry that we are taking someone's seat who
just got up (before we got there), so we tend to error
on the side of caution and not use them.
