Is it possible that what you are remembering might be the articles about 
the SCA in TD #24 & #29? If so, these were written by Allen Hammack, and do 
not refer to Gygax. BTW, Hammack says in one article that he was recruited 
into the SCA from a list of D&D players, probably one of many to come to 
the SCA in the '70s by way of D&D.
