[SCA-AE] ANNOUNCE: Background Check FAQ

It's to my understanding that, the parents are suppose to stay, regardless of what THEY want to do. Also, if your child is under the age of 12 or 13, they MUST be in your eye sight, at all times. This was explained to me, at an event, over the past summer.

My then 5 yr old son, was playing near a building, on the property, and I was told that, I had to be able to see him, until his 13 yr old brother, and his 13 yr old cousin, stepped out from along side the building. It was then realized, by the Autocrat, that I did have someone watching, and playing with, my 5 yr old son.

I also know that, parents/guardians need to start getting told that, if they bring their child/children, then they are expected to actually watch and tend to them, or make other arrangements, for the children.

It is also, to my understanding that, Autocrats and Seneschals are to be informed of disappearing parents, the parents are to get a verbal warning, with an incident report made and filed, the second warning, the parent and child/children are asked to literally be next to each other, and if it happens a third time, then they are kicked out of the event/practice, and another incident report is made and filed, and those parents face a ban from events/practices, for a certain period of time, due to not supervising their own children.

Me, being a mercenary, have this moto,"How much will I get paid, for my services? I usually charge $50.00, for the first hour, and then $25.00 each additional 1/2 hour, and later fees of $20.00 per every 5 minutes, and this is cash up front, no refunds." Other wise, watch your own child.

I have actually seen the same parents pull a disappearing act, at every event/practice they go to, with their child/children, yet, no one actually does anything about it, except complain to each other.

Kingdom and/or Corpra need to make a very clear policy on this issue, and then make it available to all areas of the Kingdoms, even if it has to be posted, to a sign, at every event/practice, for all to see, big bold letters.

I am sure this will eliminate Some of the issues with parents disappearing, and people need to NOT be afraid to "Narc" on the parent, no matter what their title or position is.

Also, say to the parent,"You know you have to stay, with your child, if they are to participate in this activity?" If they don't like it, don't bring the child to events/practices.

I am fortunate in that I have a teenager to watch my little one, be it an event/practice, or at home, if you don't have someone, then leave your armour, or what ever you do, at home, if you are not willing to actually be the parent to the child you created.

  It's that simple folks.

No sniping invovled, no rudeness to be interpreted, just the simple truth that should be common sense.

Unfortunately, that has not been, in my experience, the case. The problem
is that a parent is *not* there -- the parents are off doing what they
want to do (which has been a complaint I have heard in the past about
childrens' activities in general: that the parents basically dump the kids
off at childrens' activities and treat it as free babysitting for an hour
or two, instead of staying there themselves the way *I* understood was
supposed to happen).
I taught a class a number of years ago at an EKU. The 10 year old
daughter of the people we were crashing with (and some other girl about
the same age) came to my class -- no parents to speak of. The 10 year old
was having some problems, so I said that if she wanted I could re-show her
when we got back to her house that night. Boy, the look I got! (After
all -- we had rolled in the night before long after her bedtime, and she
and her parents had gone early to the site in the morning because her
parents were running troll; add to that seeing someone you've never met
before that weekend in garb vs. in mundane clothing.)
Maybe if the parents talk to the instructor ahead of time: "My kid has a
relatively short attention span. How detailed are the
instructions/lecture?
How dangerous are the tools you're going to be using?" (etc). But I have
yet to see it happen.
People in the SCA tend to be pretty trusting, and then when something goes
wrong the BoD/autocrats/etc. have a knee-jerk reaction, scrambling to keep
themselves from getting sued.
