This comment is NOT an official statement in any way.
This is My PERSONAL opinion, and in no way delineates SCA, nor BSA policy.

The Boy Scout of America, for over 50 years has done a background check very similar to that which the SCA is now requesting it's youth officers to undergo.

There is no "fingerprint requirement" for the BSA at this point, nor has there been in the past.

Does the BSA background check work?
  Yes.

Will the SCA background check work?
  Yes.

Is it the absolutely best course of action?
no. but... costs for background checks that involve fingerprinting make it an unreasonable course of action for most non-profit organizations.

The SCA is using a process that is working for another international non-profit organization, that is recognized for it's youth activities (The Boy and Girl Scouts of America)

  The end all is this:
If you are planning on being a youth activity coordinator, you have to follow policies from the BoD.

If you a) don't like kids, b) don't want to volunteer, or c) don't want any information about you sent to an external organization.... Don't get involved as a youth officer.

For those of us who enjoy making SCA life better for their children, and the children of others, do what you can. If you are not able to be an officer (such is the case if you are not a member), then volunteer to assist.

For those of us who are concerned parents, the youth activities coordinators are always looking for "another set of eyes" at activities. volunteer that way. No back ground check required to assist an officer of the SCA.

all in all, this is now a rule that we have to follow, whether you think it's good, bad, indifferent or inadequate. If you have a better idea, bring it forth, I am sure that the BoD would be willing to listen.

If instead, you wish to gripe about how bad it is, and that you won't EVER volunteer, it's a shame.
