Greetings to all, an approving nod to Baron Dur who seems to be a fan of the
"Bubble Boy" movie, and fond regards for the rest of you.

"Your tent/car/etc isn't an organized activity." So a child molester that
is unknown to the group (like the case the SCA is getting sued
over) could be around... NOT get involved with the children's activities
except for occasional helping along with several others, then bring/lure a
child to a tent (which is NOT the activity) and suddenly we are at square
one again....>>
Well of course. The goal of dissuading known sex offenders from doing
children's activites is only secondary. The primary goal is to insulate the
SCA from legal exposure. Will it work? Probably not. Is it misguided?
Actually...several youth officers had legal records and were implicated in
inappropriate contact with SCA kids, or so I have been told. Therefore, I
see this policy as a reasonable way to appease mundane courts, even though
it leaves a bad taste in my mind.
This policy may have an unintended benefit. Parents, including myself,
won't rely on children's activities as a way of entertaining their
offsprings while they go and do "serious things" - I assume that the number
of children's activites will drop somewhat as a result of this policy. They
will *include* their offsprings instead. That is a good thing, you know.
Teachers of classes, including myself, will account for the fact that they
may end up with more younger people in their class than in the past, and
they will gear the curricullum toward that fact. Also a good thing.
See? It will all work out. Bring your kids with you to one of my carving
classes, and I will give them a file and a piece of bone to work on while
you are looking over my sources and asking more adult questions. No
problem. And for those of you who might be concerned that the kid will poke
themselves with that file...a parent is right there. A parent will take
care of the booboo. Booboos are good. Booboos help kids grow and learn how
to use tools safely.
