We Are the Escarbuncle, the Boss on the Shield . . .
By Brion Enkazi (with a nod to Giulietta)
Back in the beginning when the world was young, Man lived in a world of
terror. After all, he was all but helpless and the world was filled with
terrifying beasts. There was the Tiger, with its fearsome claws; the Dragon
with its mighty tail; and the poor Man had nothing at all.
So the Man sat down and thought, which was the one thing he could do. When
he was done thinking, he built a sword and decided that this was good. But
the Tiger had lots of those on every paw, and the Dragon was really, really
big. The sword was not enough, and so the Man sat down to think again.
After a time he thought of the shield, and this was also good. But those
claws on the Tiger, they're really sharp, and the Dragon's tail just burst
the shield to pieces. So again the Man sat down to think.
'The shield is good, he thought, but alone it is not enough.' So the man
built a star of iron to strengthen the shield, and this was the best of all.
Now there are those who like to say, "We are as strong as the Tiger," or "We
are fierce as a Dragon." But there are also those who remember the way of
the Man, and know who rules the earth.
