As you can see there are a number of new, interesting articles this month. This is because folks have taken the time to email me copies of articles, class handouts or A&S documentation they have written. You don't have to be a Peer to write an article which other folks can learn from. And an article doesn't have to be "perfect" for others to learn from it. The depth of knowledge in our Society is way too deep for anyone to be an expert in all of it. We can best learn and improve what we do as a group and as individuals by standing on each others shoulders and lifting each other up. As part of this, I allow, nay, encourage folks to update and improve an article they submitted at any time. If you see an article or paper somewhere that you think others would like to read, please encourage the author to send me a copy for possible inclusion in the Florilegium. I know many people are off at Pennsic right now and that there are over a thousand different classes taught there. But many people, such as myself this year, don't get a chance to attend. I encourage any teachers who produced handouts for their Pennsic classes to consider sending me an electronic copy when they return and read this message. Thanks, Stefan ------ A Blending of the Past and Present Over the past eighteen years in an ongoing effort, I have been collecting bits of useful information from various newsgroups, mail lists and articles submitted to me by their authors. In order to make this information available to others, I have placed this information in a collection of files I call Stefan's Florilegium. The Florilegium is on the web at: http://www.florilegium.org I am always interested in new articles. If you have written an article that would be of interest to others in the SCA, please send it to me for possible inclusion in the Florilegium. A&S documentation and class handouts will also often work out well. I am also interested in volunteers who might be interested in helping me maintain the Florilegium. Everything from collecting materials, editing and web work is needed. Again, please contact me for more details. It is a great venue to see. Almost as large as Allentown, but I feel it is friendlier with less streets to maneuver. Great little specialty and antique shops are open during the run. Last year they even had music and poetry readings which I hope will be offered this year as well. A wonderful place for friends to get together and spend the day! One could indeed spend the whole day by walking the Art festival first, and then taking in a relaxing evening performance of Shakespeare in the Park in Delaware Park, Buffalo NY. The Merry Wives of Windsor is playing at Delaware and a small group of us are already planning on going. Specifically there were 4 penetrations in the town battle alone that were all Siloflex/RubberStopper style. In at least one case, the rubber stopper itself also went into the helm slightly. In two cases, the penetration caused minor injury. (One ruptured blood vessel in an eye, another got a black eye). Much discussion was held at the Marshal's meeting, and decisions were made. ------------------------ Effective immediately by the Society Earl Marshal & the Deputy Society Earl Marshal for Combat Archery, the following changes to equipment are required due to repeated incidents of helm penetrations: * Combat Archery ammunition may have AT MOST 1" thick (deep) padding on the tip after taping. * All UHMW (Ultra-High Molecular Weight) & Siloflex/Rubber Stopper ammunition must have a SIDE WRAP of foam added that brings the total diameter of the blunt to AT LEAST 1.5" after taping. This wrap must extend from the tip to at least 1/2" over the UHMW or Siloflex itself. (Simply using 1.5" wide foam with no side wrap is not acceptable.) * All fletches on any arrows, bolts, or thrown weapons can project no further than 1/2" from the shaft, or must be 1.5" thick. * NOTE: All Marshals need to be rigorous in their inspections of all tips (arrows & thrusting) and mass weapons. Ensure that the foam is firm, will not bend over, returns to shape when compressed, and can not be easily pushed into a legal helm more than 1/2". --------------------------- Tristen Sexwulf Earl Marshal of ?thelmearc "Quicumque est necesse pro malum praevaleo est pro bonus men efficio nihil." This is not an event. However, it will be the last official practice we hold in Stormsport for the balance of 2008. Since we have paid for SCA equestrian insurance we can do authorizations. We will provide equipment for basic games and a few specialty authorizations. To a more limited degree we will be able to provide horses for those who want to auhtorize but don't have a horse of their own or can't trailer the distance. (We own a few ;-) ) Our horses will be provided on a first come first mounted basis. They will not be allowed to over extend themselves. This means we can accommodate about 7-8 riders before they are done for the day. Please plan accordingly. We may have a few rental horses available, I will know more about rentals as the clinic date draws closer. The site has both an indoor and outdoor arena, so the clinic will be held rain or shine. Rider Requirements: We will not be providing riding lessons. Participants who wish to authorize should already know their riding basics. You will need to bring regular(mundane)riding gear. (Riding helmets are optional for adults, unless you are borrowing a horse from us, in which case they will be mandatory.) Minors must be at least 10 years of age and accompanied by at least one parent/legal guardian who must stay on site. (SCA requirement.) Minors who show up without their parent/legal guardian will not be allowed to ride. Notes from home appointing an adult supervisor will not be sufficient. If you have games/mounted combat-crests/jousting weapons and gear please feel free to bring it along. All gear must conform to Aethelmearc games standards and requirements. Horse Requirements: The owner of the stables requires both a negative Coggins (within the 2008 calendar year) and rabies vaccinations. If you are coming from out-of-state Mike (the owner) would appreciate it if you had a vet check with a 30 day health certificate. Obviously sick horses will be turned away. The stable owner has the final word on this. If you are planning on bringing a horse(s) please let me know how big your trailer is. We have limited parking for trailers and a "heads up" is always appreciated. Limited pasture boarding is available for those of you who are staying overnight.* If you'd like to come to the clinic please e-mail Alexander at duane at velocity dot net for further details. Take care, Alexander and Rannveigr * The local hunt and saddle club is hosting a hunter pace the next day. Check http://www.ehsc-lhpc.org/ for details. We will be ending the clinic at 3 PM so that those of us who are interested can do a course walk. That's low. I know our block was far less full than normal. Keran Roslin Dug wrote: >Okay, I didn't make it to Pennsic. > >I do have a question: what was the attendance? I didn't hear the final count (nobody came around to our camp selling papers the last day). I do know that several people I was expecting to see weren't there, including some friends who camp just across the road from us. Additionally, a lot of people in my camp were only coming in for weekends (and in fact one couple were only there the first week); one person got sick at the last minute and only showed up to drop paperwork off to another campmate, and was basically only on site for a couple of hours (she had to cancel the class she was supposed to teach due to laryngitis).
