Sad but true (was Re: [SCA-AE] FW: THEFT at Gulf Wars)

Greetings from Myfanwy!
That really sucks.
Unfortunately, thievery is a fact of life, even inside the SCA. Last
Pennsic I talked to several jewelry merchants who were robbed, and
someone apparently even tried to break into the Coopers' store! :-(
For one of the Pennsic jewelers, a lot of consignment items were taken
that he hadn't yet paid for. He's just out that money. For another,
the worst part was that she trusted the SCA (it was her first event in
a decade) -- at a mundane event like a Renn Faire, she said she would
have taken more precautions.
As a Gulf Wars merchant myself, I had to make sure to have a
counterfeit-check pen in case someone gave us a $50 bill (we flat out
refused to take $100s, even on days when we *could* have made change)
and in theory I probably should have also been checking all the $20s.
Years ago, there was an ad placed in _Pikestaff_ by a lady whose armor
and weapons were stolen at Pennsic. Even with her device on everything
(including the shield and tabard), it disappeared, and, AFAIK, she
never got anything back.
