Greetings from Myfanwy!
Interesting. That suggests the former theory (keeping secrets from the
uninitiated), even though it was a single story building.
The big fancy house at Old Sturbridge Vilage, the Salem Towne House (I
double-checked the name on the OSV website) has a second story room
decorated with what are believed to be Masonic emblems. They think that
meetings may have been held in the room. It sounds as if the house dates
to the late 1700s; Sturbridge represents a typical New England town in the
early 1820s and 30s, IIRC (the various buildings come from different
places, and were brought to the site and restored -- various houses are
from MA, CT, VT, RI, etc).
