Greetings from Myfanwy!
My (admittedly somewhat limited) understanding is that traditionally
Masonic lodges were always on an upper floor. I've run across differing
reasons for this: one was that they were protecting their "secrets" from
prying eyes and ears; the other was that -- as a (nominally) Christian
organization -- they were referring (somewhat) to the "upper room" from
the Last Supper.
I don't know which (if either) is correct. I do know that most of the
lodges I've run across in my life have had their meetings on the second
floor. For example, the lodge my dad was a member of, back when I was a
kid, had their own building and IIRC they had their meetings upstairs (the
last time I was in the building was when I was at a Christmas party when I
was about seven, so I don't remember if the social hall was upstairs or
not. The lodge my brother-in-law belongs to is on the second floor of a
building that has regular stores on the ground level, with meeting rooms
and a social hall all together on the second floor (my mother-in-law's
80th birthday party was held there). There's some sort of lodge in the
center of my town that (as far as I can tell) has a similar sort of
set-up, because there are storefronts at street level.
OTOH, when my parents moved to NJ, my dad joined an organization called
The Old Guard. His chapter had their own building (apparently this was
somewhat unusual) but I think it was only one story. I don't think they
had any connections to the Masons.
