Of course, I feel that no discussion of inappropriate bardness would be
complete without the awful presentation of a professional string quartet
during Court. They were not in period costume and they played three
lovely baroque numbers, paid for by a member of my shire. Baroque music
is lovely, but unfortunately 100 years out of period.
Since I was the autocrat, I was deservedly taken to task for this. There
was no way to politely remove oneself from the music, and lengthened
court by more than 10 minutes, if not 15+.
I had argued with the gentle about the music. He wanted an hour concert
during court, which I suggested happen during dinner, and the musicians
refused to be in the background. I then suggested after dinner as an
optional activity, which was likewise spurned. We did argue about garb,
and I insisted on it, and did not find until they showed up that he had
refused to inform them of the garb requirment. I ended up compromising,
and in retrospect I most assuredly should not have.
It may have been okay, if they had garb, they played appropriate music,
and audience not held captive.
