I disagree completely and whole heartedly with the last line. School is not
there to teach ethics or morals of any kind. That is my job as a parent. It
is mine and my wifes' decision what morals we wish our children to learn and
what is and is not ethical. Morals and ethics are not absolute and therefore
not the purview of the primary and secondary education system. They should
teach facts. Sound facts based on the scientific method and recorded history
taught as a best hypothesis. As an example of the havoc this can cause my
eldest two sons came home one day after a school lecture very disturbed.
When we finnaly got them to open up to us they broke down in tears wailing.
Apparently, all in one day the kids were lectured in drug and alcohol issues
and they got these messages: 1. Alcohol is a drug. 2. Drugs are bad. 3.
People who use drugs are called druggies. And 4. Druggies mistreat their
families and sometimes hurt people and go to jail. I spent the better part
of the next 2 days trying to explain to my children why daddy wasn't a
druggie and wasn't going to jail because he'd had a beer with a visiting
friend a couple of weeks ago. My childrens moral and ethical education is my
concern until they reach the age of majority, then they can form their own
just like I did.
