This is EXACTLY why I feel that the school is not being consistent nor are they correct.
As to their Mascot...
if you follow the reasoning of "be consistent and don't let your mascot hold a weapon" what about school districts that say "no animals on campus", then they have a bulldog for a mascot?
or they have an animal handling/husbandry class track. Are they being consistent?
It's not (IMHO) about if their mascot (cartoon or not) has a weapon.
For goodness sake, he's militia from the Revelutionary war.
it's like saying Autn Jemima can't portray Aunt Jemima as an "African American" as it is portraying her in a bad light.
Let's get off our Collective PC butts and stop griping about PC idiocy in others and face the facts that this is a "war" about whether it's right for a student to portray his interests (as long as it is not indecent or illegal) for the world to see.
IMHO, I believe that this young lord should have been asked "Is it possible to have you take a picture without the weapon? we could put your picture in that way..." or "School regulations state that we need a 'formal' picture. Our definition of formal is .... Please retake your picture to meet the school requirements".
Or even, "We're sorry but we can not approve the picture because of the weapon in it. You will need to make a decision. if you insist on the picture with the weapon, it will not be in the yearbook. If you can offer a comprimise without a weapon, we can accept that".
Any of these arguments would have made good, sound, LEGAL options for the school. However, the principal did not follow any of these options. Instead he said "hey, pay us and you can do it"

In other discussions I've seen on this topic, it was noted that the family was offered to PAY for an ad that would be able to have the sword. Soooo as long as they were shelling out some $$$, he could have his pic with the sword.

i think these parents are almost enjoying the fuss

I think it neglects the fact that the "rule" is not enforced consistently and that the school itself violates it for its own convenience. Rules are not just for the ruled...they are for the rulers as well. That is what a free society is all about. When government officials are unwilling to obey their own regulations when they can be applied to them, as is happening in this case, they jeopardize their own credibility and their own legitimacy.
You want a "zero tolerance" policy? Fine. The mascot's weapons have to go first.
