In other discussions I've seen on this topic, it was noted that the family was offered to PAY for an ad that would be able to have the sword. Soooo as long as they were shelling out some $$$, he could have his pic with the sword.

I think it neglects the fact that the "rule" is not enforced consistently and that the school itself violates it for its own convenience. Rules are not just for the ruled...they are for the rulers as well. That is what a free society is all about. When government officials are unwilling to obey their own regulations when they can be applied to them, as is happening in this case, they jeopardize their own credibility and their own legitimacy.
You want a "zero tolerance" policy? Fine. The mascot's weapons have to go first.
