[SCA-AE] you are mean against new people!!!!!!!!!!!

Greetings,

Being new, I'm not sure my view belongs here.  But, I could not resist.

I took the original poster's message to be directed at the discussion on shields.  (But, I've been known to be wrong.)

The new topic being mean people, and becoming a member of the SCA.

There are two parts to that.  For the first, there are mean people everywhere.  Not just the SCA.  I see people do mean things every day.  It doesn't change or stop my attitude.  It doesn't 'make' me into a mean person.  I choose not to let mean people do that, or have that power over me.

The second part is becoming a member of the SCA.  Again, you'll run into mean people everywhere.  (School, work, vacation, planning a wedding)  Yes, there are tight knit smaller groups in the SCA.  People that have found other people that have things in common with them, people that have become close over time.  Yes, it's hard to break through that outer wall into the place where you want to be ultimately.  No, it's not easy.  

Nothing good is easy.  If you are going to quit at the very beginning because it's not worth the effort.  What are you saying to those people is "you were right all along, I don't belong here." If it means something, if it matters, it's worth following.  It's worth doing whatever you have to do to get where you want to go.  

I am new too.  I've run into some mean people.  But, I'm not allowing any one person, not two people, not twenty people stop me from doing what I really enjoy doing.  Not because I am that pig headed (well, maybe just a little because of that).  But, mostly because I have to look at myself every day in the mirror.  I couldn't do that if I were to just quit anything that got hard.  Besides doing the hard stuff... that's what defines you.  What makes you the kind of person other people want to be around.  

So, stick around, keep at it, and just make googly faces at the mean people.
