[SCA-AE] why sheild Change?

Forgive me if I've missed the answer to my question, But why the change? Is it a saftey issue? This seems rather unfair when it affects so many.
   
   I am very dissappointed in the change. I am trying to get armour together so I can learn more about fightig so I can teach the kids more. I am very concerned I will not be able to weild a heavy sheild. How many other women find this to be an issue ?  the few sheilds I've used were plastic and i liked the feel of it over the heavy shield i got for my son. Even he prefers a smaller lighter sheild than the heavy metal one.
   
  Could we get a little more clarification on this issue?
   
  I am atleast grateful to Caladus for not allowing this decision to affect Boffers.
