You will notice that the rule does not say "period wood, metal or leather"
but "wood, metal, leather, or other period materials", so that non-period
metals and woods would be acceptable (very important given how tough and
expensive it would be to have *only* period woods and metals be acceptable),
as well as all authentic period materials not previously given (canvas over
whalebone, for example, though I have no idea whether that was actually
done).

For starters, because taste and social pressure don't appear to have much
effect in this arena, and I felt that the reasons given me were quite
reasonable and acceptable.
