I once volunteered to collect entrance fees at a small event in BMDL
called While the Winter Away. It was a winter gaming event. I'm
really not much good at period games, and you really don't want me in
the kitchen, so when Master Alaric, our beloved Exchequer, needed a
second person to serve with him, I happily volunteered.

It was early in the day, and I got out my knitting so as to have
something to do between greeting people. Another lady came up to pay
her fee, noted my knitting, and asked if she might join me. I was
happy for the company, and that freed Alaric to attend to other things.

Not too long after, another lady came to the gate, paid her fee, and
asked if she could stitch with us. And thus it continued throughout
the morning! We ended up with around a dozen ladies happily pursuing
various kinds of handwork, chatting, greeting people, and having a
grand time! I think it was the only time I have seen a sewing circle
break out at the Gate! :)

So yes - service as Tollner is a wonderful way to meet people,
welcome them, and contribute to an event, all while having a great time!

Hugs,
