Perhaps part of the problem is that it was not all that clear, at least not to me. (I did email the society seneschal with my list of questions, though). But what the original post said was : "Since 2002, there have been 88 revocation and denial of membership
decisions rendered by the Board of Directors. 29 of these have been for
conviction of predatory crimes. 24 of these have been with regard to abuse
of minors."
Nowhere was the SCA mentioned. I, for one, assumed that these were people who had been convicted in a mundane court for something that happened outside the SCA (much like we have revoked memberships for people who have been convicted of a murder, although it did not happen at an SCA activity). Not that this makes it any better, but it does not say in connection with SCA activities in the original post. Should it have? Were these in fact things that happened at SCA activities?
If these convictions were not because of incidents in an SCA youth-specific activity setting, then it would appear that our policies of two adults running one are working. If they happened at an SCA setting where an adult was alone with a child, then the new rule, alas, won't help that anyhow, but knowing might encourage parents to be more vigilent? But it would be nice for us to know if these happened at SCA events or not.
Pease understand that I am not trying to make light of anything, but I think if the original post had clearly said that these were for offenses that happened in an actual SCA setting at actual SCA activities, (along with my long list of other questions) there might not have been such an uproar. Clarity is a wonderful thing,
I feel bad about beating a dead horse again, but now I really am wondering, because, for me, this might change my view if these things actually happened in an SCA context.
