Thank you Renata, you hit the nail on the head.

If these background checks protect even _one_ child in
Aethelmearc from sexual molestion or rape, it is worth it. These
horrific acts effect a child for the rest of their lives, even
with intense therapy. Any man out there married to a woman who
was molested as a little girl will _get it_. Don't get me wrong
boys can be molested too and often are.

When my daughter was a little girl she had a girlfriend who
molested by a grandfatherly type in their neighborhood. It went
to trial, he was found guilty, he went to jail as a 68 year old
man. This little girl had a lot of problems, the family moved
away but we stayed in touch. She is 25 years old now and still
having intimacy problems with her husband. This is _after_ her
parents did everything right, put her in counseling off and on
through out the years, dealt with a child nightmaring on a
regular basis, helped her to develop coping techiniques, the
whole shebang.

There was a horrifying court case in the East Kingdom in the not
too distant past in which a man- heavily entrenched in youth
activities- was found guilty of more horrendous acts against
children than I have fingers and toes. He is currently parked in
jail, for a long time.
Folks, this stuff happens to regular people.

These 2 background checks which cost about $10.00 a piece could
certainly prevent a large percentage of heinous acts against
children. Are there crafty molesters out there? Yup. Truth is,
predators will come to where children congregate and study the
group- looking for their next target. As was mentioned earlier,
they are looking for the loner, the one no one wants to play
with, the one one whose parent is *always* late to pick them up,
etc. they will become that child's *friend*. Also mentioned-
keep your eyes peeled on your darlings- if wounded, these scars
run so deep they go to the core of a person.
If you want to rant with me, do it privately, off list. I am
absolutely passionate about Our children and I'd be willing to
do whatever it takes to prevent harm to my children as well as
your children. And if you don't have kids, you may have neices,
nephews, god-children, I care about their safety and well being 
too.
