As with most favorites, my most favorite scroll has a story:
I found that for the first time in my SCAdian life, I had to miss Pennsic. The baby we were expecting (our third) in early July was significantly overdue, and the birth was quite difficult, reulting in a lengthy hospital stay. The doctor warned us that I needed to take it very easy, and that because of the risk to my health with each succeeding birth, this was definately our last child. I didn't protest staying at Camp Grandma with the new baby for two weeks. The pampering was much appreciated.
However, I found that I really missed Pennsic and my family. Gilbert, required to go to hold the land for the rest of the group, went to Pennsic with the two little girls on his own, an act of sheer bravery given that it was the mud Pennsic and they were *his* children. Can you say 'opinionated'? There were three alpha personalities in that camp, and two of them were aged five and under :). He has stories.....
At any rate, I was touched to the point of tears to receive from my brother, Baron Tigranes, a beautiful scroll upon his return from Pennsic. Here is the text, which I have memorized:
"We, friends and members of Clan Chatten, do offer our heartfelt congratulations to Lady Aoife Finn and Lord Brion Domnhall mac Ghille Brighde, on the occaision of the birth of their daughter, Susan..." it was then dated and signed by many of our friends from many camps, at Pennsic.
It's my favorite not just becasue it commemorates the missed Pennsic. You see, it isn't an award scroll, and does not convey honors. Instead, it is my honor to have such steadfast friends and relations. It is signed by my friends, which makes this a personal document. And then again, it's beautiful and quirky. Prominently placed at the top of the scroll is a large pink Binky. Thistles (from his device) and peacock feathers (from my device) adorn the borders. When we do demos, I like to show several examples of beautiful scrolls from the collection one tends to gather over the years, including peerage scrolls which are simply magnificent. And then, I show this one last, as my favorite.
Call me sentimental, but the one created by my brother, and signed by all those who were concerned for me, is irreplaceable.
Cheers
