[SCA-AE] reign costs?

Unless we are deluding ourselves (which is entirely possible)
Christopher and I have spent much less out of pocket on the current
reign.

We estimate having spent between $3000 - $4000 over the past year (as
heirs and on the throne), although we have not kept clear records. That
includes County coronets, fabric for garb, garb-related purchases such
as buttons, pearls, pins, shoes, fencing gloves, etc. (some of which we
would have bought anyway), and some costs for gifts, largesse, etc.

That being said, we had quite a stockpile of fabric when we won Crown,
due to years of being too busy to sew (but not to collect), and we have
very generous friends who have given us not only garb but the fabric as
well, often refusing compensation. Many people donated time and
materials for largesse such that our expenses for that were minimal
(and we could give really nice things). We also have been fortunate to
have a friend who has donated travel food for all of our road trips,
which has been quite generous and is appreciated. We have been able to
stay with old friends and new friends for many events (including one
out of kingdom), and our vehicle fits us, our stuff and the regalia and
still gets about 30-32 mpg on the highway! All of this helps.

If we had gone to Estrella or needed lots of fabric, etc. clearly our
costs would have been much higher. I also suspect that living in BMDL,
which is relatively central and on the great North-South artery that is
the 79 corridor, helps cut down on need for hotels, gas, days off, etc.

I think it is wise to consider what you can spare financially, what you
might need to or want to attend during your reign, and what extra
expenses you may incur (such as a new tent or lots of fabric). Then add
in an extra $500 for unexpected stuff and and decide if it's fiscally
wise for you.

I'm also sure that a reign could be done for less, given the right base
(already having lots of really nice garb, a good tent, a large vehicle,
etc.) and circumstances. But there is likely a lower limit of
out-of-pocket expenses that will vary by couple and by winter/summer
reign.

All that said, I agree with Her Excellency that the experience was
worth every penny!

Regards,

Morgen
