[SCA-AE] reign costs?

Having followed this discussion with interest (as our own Barony board sometimes also has, um, lively discussions) I did have one question/poll/ whatever? I'd be very interest in hearing from past rulers on out-of-pocket financial costs for an actual reign. I've heard anything from a couple of thousand to up to ten thousand. My own thoughts would have been skewed toward the lower end since there are not that many of us who could afford the upper, but I'm truly curious. This would include royal garb, travel, phone bills, letters, largesse - anything that came out of pocket and was not donated.
  (I know that personally, if I were ever to be fought for and my champion victorious, I'd need to budget at least the 2K for pearls and trim, LOL.)
