I'm sorry but, what about the other just as deserving people in the SCA knowne world who CAN'T afford to pay the fees to the College of Heralds?

Do we tell them "tough luck, we're going to give the 'elite' the money so that they can do what you have been scrimping and saving for, for years" ?
I don't think this is the answer either.

I think that this is a reasonable request to ask of entrants to the list to pay out of their own pockets, just like any other SCA member is asked to do.

The fact that they are entering in a Crown list is testament itself to the fact that they are financially, and emotionally ready to take on the responsibilities of the Crown.
  Please note the word responsibilities.
Why would it not be a responsibility of the contenders for Crown to uphold the ideals of pageantry, with their own arms, whether they've earned an AoA or not?
After all, doesn't one when they step down from the Crown sometimes receive a GRANT level award? Doesn't this automatically come with an AoA if the recipient does not yet have one?

Giving people "freebies" is not the way to increase entrance into the Crown list.
I don't have the answers as to how to increase the crown list entry, but don't think that changing this is going to make a big difference.

I think we all saw that one coming -- it's not an apparent matter of not
being able to afford the cost of submission, it's that this must be paid to
enter that is the contention.
