i can understand why being king/queen might have/need some requirements so
as to weed out the less serious candidates. kingdom stuff is far more
serious than principality stuff. we don't need a hot stick with no
funds/maturity to carry out the responsibilities that winning crown brings.
this i get.
i also want to say that there are few people whom i admire as much as i do
our duke rurik. he is one of the people that i talk about in great detail
when introducing my mundane friends and colleagues to the idea of the sca
and what it is and can mean. no need to go into those reasons here, if you
really want to hear the spiel, talk to me sometime, it'll make you think.
i'd also like to point out that southern WV is 3 hours from the nearest
group (misty highlands) and at least 5 hours from BMDL. and yes, WV is light
on peers - also light on population, big on space. it's nice to say that
people in southern WV who are serious about being on the throne might need
to travel more, but ok, that's a heck of a long way to drive to play on a
regular basis, and that costs. and guess what, folks in WV might not be
making what folks in upstate NY are. yes, as king/queen they would need to
travel, but none the less, i think it *might* be difficult for someone down
there, no matter their potential, to know 3 peers well enough to ask for
letters of recommendation. just my opinion.
now my point. i've known rurik since he was a wet behind the ears prince
heir. he was young. he was eager. he was good. and he had potential. i'll
bet he didn't have arms. i'll bet he didn't know 3 peers. and he did a damn
fine job. (he also had a damn fine partner on the throne i might add - they
were a great team.) and look. he's grown to fill that potential, and more,
and THEN some. i can't think of anyone that i would be prouder to see
representing our fine kingdom as king. (no offense the rest of you ;)
i understand having some sort of vetting process. but if the requirements
for fighting in crown become more and more stringent.... i HAVE to wonder
who we might be missing out on.
