[SCA-AE] Crown Tourney Question/personal banner display?

Why require submission of arms to the Heralds to fight in crown?

Coming from out of Kingdom I can tell you why other groups do so....

When you become King & Queen, you have responsibilities and requirements to the Kingdom. Granted during your reign that you bear the arms of the Kingdom, but when you step down and are receiving your County it's expected that there will be a coat of arms to put onto the scroll.

But is that the only reason to require that one have their heraldry submitted to the college of Heralds?

The basic things that would make it reasonable to "pay the price" of submission:

  1) playing the game. We're all about playing the game, and if we are playing, then why not play the whole thing. the SCA defines part of that playing of the game as registering your name and device.
After all, "King Sir Not appearing in this film" would not be a happy occurence would it?

  2) Pomp and circumstance.
What makes a better show of our populace? a long line of white shields, with no blazoning of devices, or individual devices displayed on one shield, with a banner beside it?

To my untrained eye, I would have to say the latter of these is the desired affect.

For the record, no I am not fighting in crown, and at this point in time, even if I would have had the letters prepared, I can not in good conscience say that I could fulfill the duties of the Crown should I win at this time. therefore, it is my decision not fight in crown, but to go to crown, and if "side bar fighting" is available, then make myself available for it.

  Humbly,

I went back and read this. I don't think the question is whether the
cost of submission was a problem. We all know that that has to be paid
for.

I think the question is really can a requirement to fight crown be put
in place that makes it so you MUST pay the submission fee? This means
in order to fight crown that you must pay more then the required
membership fee.

Somehow I don't think its truly an issue though. I think that the
requirements are fully legal though I may disagree with some of them
personally.

In service,
Lord Snaebjorn
