As an academic side note to the discussion - it is, as Maria pointed
out, a learning experience.
One of the things I look for in a potential peer is how they handle a
situation like this. All of us, at one time or another, do something we
wish we could undo. Sometimes small and private, sometimes big and
public, but it is something all of us have to face. Being a peer, you
can't run to your Knight, Laurel, Pelican or Patron and say "Oh, dear.
I've messed up. Now what do I do?" You must handle it yourself.
Learning how to do this, is one of the parts of the path to being a peer
that is not generally discussed, but it's very important.
I know both of their Excellencies reasonably well. I was not surprised
at the quick apologies on both of their parts. They are both truly
amazing people, with a great deal to teach us all. I know well, having
been there, how awful it feels to wake up the next day and think "Oh,
dear." I commend them on their good example, and encourage those of you
on the path to the peerage to learn from it.
No one is perfect. The measure of a man is often in how he deals with
his imperfections.
