Correct entirely. Mundane politics don't belong here. Both sides. I took it 
that someone was attempting to raise a polite gesture of gratitude. Though 
many may disagree with the method, it was far more wrong that the prime 
responses had their own politically directed underpinnings.

Maybe I'm out of touch, but I was counselling mercy in response. All that 
was needed was to say "nice sentiment, but this isn't the right place for 
the politics" and then moved along. We could have quietly let it pass as a 
good intention that doesn't have total agreement.

Unfortunately, this has gone on far more than that.
