Greetings from Myfanwy!
Several years ago at Pennsic, Alastar and I were heading back to our
camp from BMDL. We stopped in up at Clan O'Choda on the way home, for
what was *supposed* to be a few minutes -- it was the tenth wedding
anniversary for the first two people I met at my first event.
We got up there, and discovered that El of the Two Knives was telling
*ancient* Pennsic stories (Pennsic, 2, Pennsic 6, etc.) as if he was a
bard telling oh, say, Beowulf (even though he was actually at a lot of
them himself, he was telling them like ancient history or folktales).
Like I said, it was supposed to be a brief stop. We were there for
probably a couple of hours. I could have happily stayed there the rest
of Pennsic, as long as El was still talking. We finally had to give up
and drag ourselves back to camp or else fall asleep on the benches
around the firepit.
It was the first year that Pandora's Box was camped in the woods down
behind us, and I remember saying on the way back to camp that the
Pandora's Box people should be hearing these stories (but probably
wouldn't appreciate them).
That was one of the few true magical moments I've ever had in the SCA,
where it all became "really real".
The other was at Pennsic 21, waking up on a foggy morning and wandering
around camp (we were out on Battle Road back then, almost to the North
Gate) to see if anyone else was up. After about a half hour I somehow
happened to look up towards Mt. Aislinn -- it was the morning of the
Chalk Horse.
Damn. I'm getting all misty eyed just thinking about those two
incidents.
