Good morning and greetings from your neighbors in the Midrealm.
Please forgive the bandwidth, but I would like to pass along information on the
following event which includes a medieval science fair. I know that there are many
scholars and artisand in your fair Kingdom with talents to share. I hope we will see
some of you in Canton, Ohio on February 18.

On February 18, 2006, the Marche of Alderford will present
The Masque of Courtly Love 9.1: A Medieval Science Fair
http://alderford.org/events/masque2006
As always, the Masque will feature:
*Armoured combat
*Rapier combat
*Youth combat (if a Marshal is available)
*Arts and Sciences classes
*Bardic and/or theatrical entertainment
*Delicious Feast by THL Francesca de Onorati
This year, however, the autocrats have elected to include a Medieval Science
Fair under the watchful eye of Mistress Gwyneth Banfhidhleir (mka Ginny
Claphan) sciencefair at alderford.org and encourage the artists and scientists
of the Kingdom to participate.
"Our vision for the Science Fair is that it resembles a traditional school
science fair, with two differences: it's for adults as well as youth, and
the fair includes projects based on pre-1600 CE Western and Eastern
civilization.
'Science' in the Middle Ages was intricately woven into religion, philosophy,
culture, and myth, and wasn't necessarily the objective fact-finding that
modern science at least pretends to be, even though it sometimes falls
short. For example, a period-style demonstration of some scientific "fact"
or principle that is *totally wrong* would be perfectly acceptable, as long
as it is totally wrong in an historically accurate way. That does not mean
the particular demonstration has to be documentable to period -- what we are
after is the "feel" of period science, as authentic as we can make it, but
still within the broader bounds of *Creative* Anachronism.
The emphasis of the fair is to have hands-on or at least be demonstrative
exhibits, but papers and treatises can be presented in-persona to achieve
that same quality and to involve the audience. "

Thanks and see you at the Fair!
