Yes, well, there a was a case in one of the local school districts
around here a couple of years ago, in which a first or second grader
got suspended for bringing a (plastic) ax to school as part of his
fireman's costume for Halloween, so something that was obviously metal
(even if a prop) could have been construed otherwise as well.
I'll admit that back when I was in high school, in NYS, senior yearbook
portraits involved suits and ties (IIRC) for guys, and those blue
velvet drape thingies for us females. I gather times have changed.
