The other thing that no-one has mentioned so far in this discussion is going to your local farm supply store (Southern State, Agway, Tractor Supply, I think even wally world has them now) and spending a few pennies for a pair of rubber barn boots.   They are worth their weight in gold.    The wool socks are a splendid idea:   if your feet are not warm, you will NOT be able to sleep (trust me on this, I work outdoors in the winter).   I have a Mongolian ger and have a tarp cut more or less circular for a ground cloth, but cut a couple of feet wider in diameter than the tent so it can be brought up along the sides to keep water out.
  As far as canvas waterproofing is concerned, I highly recommend the Canvak product that Panther Pavilions carries.   My ger roof was starting to ooze a bit in 2003/Pennsic 32.    I used the Canvak on it in 04/Pennsic 33, the Pennsic Puddle under discussion, and stayed as cozy and dry as anyone could wish (being on Horde Hill does help some with the runoff problems.............)   I had laid out the roof on a tarp and used a disposable roller to apply the Canvak and it worked well for me.   
  If nothing else, a roll of heavy duty mulch plastic will be a useful thing to bring along.   It will make everything from tarps to groundcloths to rain ponchos.   But personally, my number one priority would be a cheap pair of barn boots.   Dry feet are warm feet, and there is no sense in ruining good leather boots.
