My dad, numerious uncles, and my grandfather all served and/or fought 
during many different wars.  I know for a fact that Dad had to buy 
stamps.  He was just happy when he found out that servicemen and women 
could send mail with regular envelopes, paper, and stamps instead of 
the airmail items that it was recommended that family and friends use 
to send him mail.
