[oe-sync] Open Edge Computing Initiative - Progress Call on Thursday this week

Valerie, Guenter and Satya,
Many thanks for your feedback regarding our joint presentation. Below, I listed the changes I have done (in red) based on your feedback in the final deck (attached)..

@All,
Yes, there is still a lot of room for improvement with the deck. In particular we should discuss if anybody has access to marketing resources to improve the design and layout of the presentation. Still, I would like to get that approved in our call tomorrow, such that all of us have a "neutral" deck about the initiative to share.
Fine for you for now?

Kind regards
Rolf.

Hi Rolf,
The deck is a good start. Some minor tweaks were made. Would it be better to state that the initiative is driving from the cloud to the network?
--> I changed the wording of the "main target" on slide 6 to "Enable Cloud Computing at the Edge". We should discuss that. I would avoid the work network, as that is everywhere...
When will you be presenting?
--> Potential partners, MEC Congress in September in London...
It does not have anything about the course and potential next steps. Should we discuss those?
--> I added a slide on current activities and plans. We have to remember to either update it regularly or take it out...

Thanks,
Best regards,
Valerie

Comments from Guenter

Page 3:

- What is meant with "Very small devices"? smaller smartphones? iWatch type? Google Glass type?

- On right side, what is meant by "Local Resilience"? Why "local"? Is the message, centralisation leads to reliance on a few DC facilities?

- We could add the factors which Satya has highlighted in papers and presentations: becoming available: new type of devices, engines for face recognition etc...., as these are enablers for very new use cases.
--> Yes, the slide requires the voice track to be understood. I have change the wording slightly for more clarity and added a note page with the explanation of the thoughts behind the trends.

Page 18:

- The arrows in the picture: how shall they be read: Arrow points from x to y: x calls an API on y? x invokes something on y?

- The arrow for A: Cloudlet Discover: Is this going indeed from device to the edge server, or instead to a discovery service (which can be located anywhere)? E.g. we said it could even be a Zynga-specific discovery server, found by the Zynga app on the device.

- The B-API for VM provisioning: Not sure whether the arrow makes sense. Is the cloud platform invoking something in a VM? Isn't the user/app deciding to use an edge service once discovered and starts to invoke the VM provisioning workflow? Should arrow B go from app on device to Open Cloud platform in the cloudlet?

- Similar for the C-API: Is triggered by the app on the device I suspect (at least in cloudlet context, not in ETSI MEC context).
--> Correct, the slide simplifies the flow quite a lot. And I think it would be good to have a simple slide everybody can understand. I changed the arrows to bring it closer to the true process, however, more complexity might not make the slide better. We have the next slide with the details. O.K.?

Further: Would it be useful to each have a slide for different stakeholder groups: Real-world touch points with Cloudlets or workflow interfaces to Cloudlets or operational aspects regarding cloudlets? .... As these slides could be used for outreach to different groups. To give some examples:

- For network operator:

- May deploy cloud software at edge locations (incl. base VMs)

- May operate a discovery service

- May offer PaaS components to developers e.g. to create launch VMs

- Etc.
For application developer:

- May create and run their own cloudlet discovery service

- May create applications designed to execute on both tier 1 cloud and at the edge

- May create apps that can offload execution to the edge on user demand

- Will use cloudlet platform API(s) to create launch VM and overlay VM

- Will make overlay VM available either together with app or on a particular web location

- May develop mechanism for the app to decide when to request a handoff
For an enterprise:

- May deploy edge servers at locations across the enterprise premises/campus

- Etc.
--> Good point. I have tried to cover some of that on slide 14, where I address the advantages for the various players. I suggest to add individual slides per target group once we have the discussions with various stakeholders.

Guenter

Action Items from Progress Call on 16 July (comments from Rolf in red)
1. Satya to send data for the Monday technical calls (currently attending: Satya, Kiryong, Prakash)
--> DONE
2. Rolf: Work on the Marketing slides at an extra call. Add: business value, addressable market, etc.
Collect data points beforehand. Think about aspects that help to convince other parties.
Work offline and then polish off during one of our sync meetings.
Ideas: address verticals. 'Crowdsourcing' the deck step by step, such that it includes good material for different verticals.
--> Draft deck to be distributed
3. Prakash: regarding Openstack, we have started to engage with them --> need endorsements.
Vendor, carrier, developers. There was a deadline for submitting a pitch to Openstack. Prakash has details.
Goal: other people in the community shall vote for this, so we can get a presentation at the OS Summit.
Action: Prakash to send a URL to all for this. Then all engage your internal stakeholders accordingly.
--> Has that happened?
4. Valerie + Patrice to discuss whether ETSI MEC PoC concept could be used in our context.
--> Feedback in call on 20 August 2015?
5. Prakash to educate us on the Umbrella Blueprint at one of the Mo technical conf calls.
--> Update durich call on 20 August 2015?
6. Kiryong: send out and share the openstackpp.pdf design document to the list once ready.
--> The document is ready? Please distribute to everybody.
7. All:
1) Check who can help Kiryong with coding and testing from early/mid Aug - end Sept. Profile: familiar with Glance, Nova, can code.
2) Check who has a person who is expert in installing differnet Openstack configurations, knows DevStack, is
familiar with Openstack Network Configurations. Tester should have access to servers.
--> DONE. Resources from Huawei! Big Thanks!
8. All: Discuss and clarify archive/storage for this project offline.
Google docs? Own cloud at CMU?
Satya will make a proposal. Aug 20 meeting can serve as a test case to try out the proposal
--> Proposal from Satya under way...
