adding new partitions

Yes, it is all in place and the ownerships/permissions are the same ar the 
existing working partitions.

Thanks for the latter information, it points to what the problem was. It seems 
I must have been picking up idle imapd processes which had been running for a 
long time. Before sending my message I had tried over a period of a couple of 
hours withhout success. Today I tried again and it worked OK, so the idle imapd 
processes have probably been restarted in that time.
